In all My Michigan Hero has taught me that life will never ever be easy and you will always have curve balls coming your way every once in awhile. Ever since we were 4 years old we have always been told to do our best at anything we do. My Michigan Hero doesn’t emphasize it everyday, he shouldn’t have to. I know what he expects of me when I walk out of that front door every morning to stroll to the bus stop. On some small occasions I am guilty of not always doing what is expected of me.…

Growing up in Michigan has been a dream come true. The sights and sounds of the Upper Peninsula are something out of a picture book. Looking out your living room window and overlooking one of the Great Lakes is something not everyone gets to experience. Moving away brought me to another great lake, another beautiful view, and more sights to see. Living in Michigan is like a never-ending tour of sightseeing.…

Supreme Court Justice and Latina woman, Sonia Sotomayor once stated, “The Latina in me is an ember that blazes forever.” After given much thought on what it means to be an Idaho Latina, I could not think of how to describe the feeling or how one thinks, acts, and lives. I feel like I haven’t found my place in the Hispanic population in school even though I am full Hispanic. I don’t speak Spanish fluently, I am at a different academic level than other Hispanics, and I have different interests. Yet the “ember still burns inside me”, thanks to my padres and my abuelos I know what is like to be an Idahoan Latina.…

I had lived in a village for 9 years of my life it was hard making new friends since everyone knew each other. Everything I am and have accomplished so far in my life can, at least in part, be credited to my parents. My mother, a professor of chemical engineering, and my father, a healthcare automation and systems integration engineer for a major healthcare provider, are my biggest role models and who I try to emulate in both my work and academics. They instilled in me the hard-working and determined attitude that enabled me to be successful in my studies, as well as the compassion, leadership qualities and self-confidence that I try to apply to my dealing with others and in my day-to-day life. Furthermore, my love of sports and physical activity that persisted throughout childhood, adolescence, and remains with me even today can be attributed partly…

As a poor girl from a poor, uneducated family that never had running water until she was in middle school, my mother had quite a few obstacles to overcome. This poem emphasizes the importance of instilling values through example. It also helps understand that our actions as parents can have a negative effect on a child long-term. Parenting does not come with a manual so these words remind us to provide our children with the best possible examples and let them be themselves. Two individuals that contributed to the healthy development of my self-concept were my father and maternal grandmother. Both individuals were proud of their culture and believed in the concept of family first.…
