Personal Narrative: My Mentoring

Improved Essays
The one time I was able to help someone is when I mentor a student at a local elementary school. When I am with the student, I am helping her out but in reality she’s helping me out so much more. I've done the mentoring program now for around five years. For the past four years I've had the same student and we have grown very close. She is from Hawaii, so she did not know very many people when she moved here. When I first met her she was very shy and she kept to herself. Most of the hour we spent together was spent in silence. At first I thought that I was not good at mentoring because she never talked and we seemed to get very little done. The whole first year that we were together she probably said five things to me. I noticed that she was more outgoing this year. She told me that a little girl moved in the side her house. They had become best friends in they were in the same class this year. I was so excited for her because I knew that that little girl helped her so much. She also told me that over the summer her dad left. She told me that her dad was really mean to her and her mom. Also, she told me that he’s times and when he does they get very afraid. I was able to sit down with the men touring supervisor and talk to her about this little girl. The three of us had A meeting and decided that it would be best that the little girl alone talk to the counselor about it. The counselor called her mom and set up appointment With her mom to talk about her options. Whenever accounts or talk to her mother her mother got very upset. Within a few weeks the dad had moved back home, And the little girl got very quite again. I knew that there wasn’t much that I can do you at that point to help her besides to be there for her. I made sure to be there every week for the rest of that year because I didn’t know what was going to happen. Some weeks she seems semi-normal and the other weeks she was very sad and tired. That is the hardest thing that you have to do is watch a child go through something like that knowing that it’s nothing you can do about it. I have done everything that I could do to inform people about what is

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. It’s such a great feeling when a student comes and they may be confused about their major or how to make a resume for a job; but by the end of the your time with them, you just see this light bulb go off in their head and they have this look of “I understand”. Even though it may be a very small interaction, I feel like I have made a small difference in their lives and I have helped them somehow.…

At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…

An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

Achievement First is a growing network of public charter schools in the Northeast. During the beginning of my freshman year of high school, I shadowed the Director of the Arts, Kerry Cabri. After a few short months of gaining experience and insight on music, I was offered the incredible opportunity to prepare a group of students for a district wide music festival in Brooklyn, New York. At first, I was incredibly nervous at the thought of mentoring students of a completely different background as me; they grew up in inner city Brooklyn, and I grew up in the suburbs of Piscataway. I didn’t know if I would able to reach the students to truly connect with them, and teach them to love music like myself.…
