My life mentor is my Mom, who taught me a lot of thing in many aspect of…
My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. It’s such a great feeling when a student comes and they may be confused about their major or how to make a resume for a job; but by the end of the your time with them, you just see this light bulb go off in their head and they have this look of “I understand”. Even though it may be a very small interaction, I feel like I have made a small difference in their lives and I have helped them somehow.…
In 2013-2014, I was the leader of the tutoring and mentoring organizations within my high school. As a tutor, I volunteered at a local elementary school, helping young students with their homework and projects. I also was a mentor to younger students in my high school, aiding them in their transition by giving them study tips and introducing them to the wide range of extracurricular activities. These roles allowed me realize my passion for helping people and cultivate the interpersonal skills I needed for nursing. In 2014 until now, I am involved in the Canadian Nurses Student Association, which is the national voice for Canadian student nurses.…
My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…
I was very excited but also nervous about meeting my school mentor. I felt better once my SU mentor gave me background information on Mrs. Trotz, my school mentor. Mrs. Trotz recently got married and graduated from Stevenson University. I thought it was cool that she graduated from the school that I am currently attending. I couldn’t wait for Tuesday morning to finally meet Mrs. Trotz face to face at Carroltown Elementary School.…
As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…
My mentor was Patrick Norris, I met Mr. Norris trough Jocelynn who is a good friend of mine and she works for the Orange Therapy Fitness Center in St louis in the marketing department. I talked to her about finding a good mentor for my class and she gave me the contact of Mr. Norris. I had the interview with Mr. Norris via Phone call and he was kind, respectful, and professional.…
My legs were shaking, as I took deep breaths and I clenched my fist and sweat slowly dripped down my face. It was morning practice and the sun was starting to creep over the horizon. The quarterback yelled “hike”, as I snapped back into reality. I began running in the direction of the players in maroon jerseys, looking for one of them to block.…
I learned a lot in one day, but I wish I could have learned it in a different way. Mom took my siblings and I to Dad’s apartment. Dad was tired, as usual, from working a twenty-four hour shift. So as he slept, my brother and sister, being the older ones, got to pick out movies for us to watch. Then, suddenly, my stomach started to twist and turn.…
According to Martin Sanders, “A healthy mentoring relationship involves asking key questions and then listening for reflections more than it is about the mentor talking, lecturing or even preaching. ”(38) Talking is more than a monologue, it is a dialogue. Both parties are learning through sharing and gathering information. The Bible says in Proverbs 4:7, “The beginning of wisdom is Acquire wisdom; and with all your acquiring, get understanding.”…
On Thursday, May 26, I was given the opportunity to ride along with Cory Mitchell, a Vice President in the Mahomet regional branch. This ride along gave me the opportunity to interview Cory throughout the day on his job, and to gain experience in a sales role prior to beginning the action selling course. The morning began early at 7am when I met Cory at the Farm Credit Illinois parking lot to meet him. We traveled to Champaign to attend a Champaign County Chamber of Commerce Agribusiness Committee Meeting on and upcoming event “Come Wine with Us.”…
Often in life we are faced with decisions to make which are taken based on our ethics and the way influencers have affected our lives. In my life my greatest influencers are my dad and grandfather because of all that they have overcome and accomplished. My father grew up with little to nothing in Mexico and so he had to make some tough decisions in order to have the best future for him and the people he cares about. He made the decision to work in the U.S. and leave his family. He now has his own business and has a better lifestyle than what he expected.…
Being part of a library means you spend your time helping others and sharing knowledge for a specific reason requested, whether you are assisting a patron or a colleague. One of the primary goals of being a part of a library, whether it is public, academic, special, or other types, is to be able to freely share information, resources, and access with people across the spectrum, regardless of who they are. In addition to these aspects being a part of our job, we respect the notion of learning and continually advocate reaching out to everyone possible in order to provide these resources. Personally, I have not participated in a mentorship program, but with my library system, newly hired managers will be often assigned a veteran in their position as a mentor. While I do not have personal experience to share, I know that from listening to others, having a mentor relieves a lot of tension and stress with the idea that you must “know it all” right off the bat.…
First Session So I get to write a descriptive essay about a special place or person. I think I 'll write about a family member who has had an impact on my life. I have so many important people in my life right now my husband, daughter, son, mother, and siblings. I 've been thinking a lot about my deceased dad.…
Introduction My life has been a non-linear journey, weaving the places I lived, the people I’ve met, the things I’ve learned and the experiences I created into the fabric of who I am. From a young age, I had an affinity for art; envisioning ideas, creating through my hands, executing projects, there wasn’t some form of the fine arts that I didn’t dabble in. It wasn’t until my senior year in high school that I interviewed for the BOCES Cultural Arts Center in Syosset, a program that fosters the arts at the collegiate level for high school students, that I had a turning point in my academic learning. Foregoing the necessary math requirements in my senior year to make room for this program in my schedule, I transitioned from a student’s role as…
