Personal Narrative: My Marching Band Journey

This season I contributed to help my superiors teach and guide the ones struggling with their learning. I also believe I have contributed to make Marching Band even more fun. At football games I am one of the most spirited and the most “hyped”. This contributes to me being more engaged into the football games and our pep tune music so our football team can come out on top. I believe My contribution at football games also made other students be more confident at football games. For example, a freshman in my section was nervous about being “lit” at football games. But when a member of my section and I helped him feel comfortable in the stands rooting on the football team.

My most prominent leadership position in my life was Senior Patrol Leader for Boy Scouts. This position is the single highest position for a scout. I was senior patrol leader at the age of 13, two years after becoming a scout. I beat out scouts older than me and more experienced than me. When I was Senior Patrol Leader I organized camping trips, flag ceremonies, organized every meeting until my position ended, and had to communicate plans every Monday night. As Senior Patrol Leader we won Boy Scout Camp’s best troop for the week. With my knowledge of Boy Scouts I know how to communicate plans, organize day to day, and long term. I also know how to deal with students struggling to learn new concepts. Boy Scouts has also taught me how to deal with brats that think they’re the boss of everyone. My previous leadership positions will be beneficial to the marching

The Serenity “Your marching technique is one of the strongest in the band, but your musicality leaves something to be desired,” sighed my band director. I left my tenth-grade memory assessment feeling flustered by overwhelming expectations that I was not fulfilling. Coming from a family of dedicated musicians, and a school where the band program is a fundamental extra-curricular activity, I felt misplaced. Through a journey of decisions, engagement in new environments, failure, and inner triumph, however, I was able to overcome these boundaries and propel myself into a future of unknowing success. It started one year prior when the influence of a close friend pushed me to learn how to play the flute.…

I joined the Chorus and the Vocal Ensemble at the high school and continued to try and better myself as a musician. My music department also offered me other musical opportunities such as festivals. I have attended several festivals such as the Lakes Region music festival and the All New England music festival. These festivals allowed me to come together with other students from different schools that loved singing and performing as much as I did. Every time I perform at one of these festivals I am overwhelmed by how beautiful music can be when everyone I am working with is just as passionate as I am about the work we are doing and also extremely talented.…

Being apart of Concert Winds during my four years has stayed infinitely close to my heart. Everyday I see students progress and learn; I see students come to class every day with a passion and enthusiastic attitude for music. As an upper class man I have the privilege of seeing younger students grow, and encourage them to continue within the arts. Nothing can make me more proud than to see students learn and help encourage them to accomplish all they can in music. The Fairfield Music Department not only teaches kids of all grade levels to be young musicians, but they serve their community and school district in countless ways.…

Apprehensively sliding through the door to Room 119 to introduce myself to the members of Gatlinburg-Pittman’s band program marked one of the most developmental courses of action I have ever taken. Learning how to march in rhythm with a flock of students of differing grades and ages, discovering the importance of working within strict time constraints, and transporting percussion equipment weighing roughly as much as myself were, among several other memories, trademarks of my freshman and sophomore high school years. Through marching and concert band, I have discovered how to effectively learn independently, to take on responsibility for my actions, and to guide underclassmen when help is requested. In doing so, my passion for being part of Gatlinburg-Pittman’s band and providing services to the program has blossomed and flourished. This year, I had the pleasure of earning a position as a section leader among our clarinetists, and now, I continue to strive to promote excellence and discipline within the section.…
