Personal Narrative: My Marathon Training

Register to read the introduction… The temperature was 83 degrees outside and the humidity was quite high. I just finished swim practice, and I was exhausted from training in the pool. I wanted nothing more than to go home and rest. But, unfortunately, my calendar reminded me that I had eight miles to run. So I proceeded to run down the driveway. After only a few steps, the struggle began. My legs felt like lead and only kept getting worse. They seemed to move in slow motion. My heart, however, had not received that memo and was pounding away as if I was in full sprint. A couple miles in, my skin burned from the mixture of dried chlorine and sweat. It was way too hot, and, although I hate to admit it, I was too out of shape. I longed to stop every single moment of that eight mile run, but I trudged on. Once I finally finished, however, I felt elated. My grimace transformed into a smile as pride filled me. All the pain and weariness seemed to fade away. I realized as much as I suffered during that training run, the agony was worth it for the feeling I experienced after completing it. Accomplishing the task brought me joy, and that fact that the task was so difficult made it all the more

I knew that I couldn’t look around or I would slow down, so I looked straight forward. I didn’t look back and when I hear my dad shouting my name, I pushed myself even further. And I won. I won. My Cross Country/Track coach is one of the best men I know. He not only betters his runners by teaching us, but he also runs with us. Pushing us to greatness with words of encouragement, he implores us to leave all energy on the course/track and teaches us to be exceptional people outside of running. He expresses to us that no matter what we do, he will always be proud of each member of the team; therefore, our actions can’t change his love for us. That’s why it was devastating when he told us before the past track season, that he would not be able to coach for the remainder of the running season from February until we initiated winter conditioning November.…

I once thought I couldn’t believe in myself! I felt as if I were nothing but a sheet of glass that was completely useless. When there were gloomy days, I felt like broken glass that was scattered all over the ground and I wouldn’t be fixable. So I thought if I joined a sport, I would then, have no choice but to believe that I can do more and accomplish more, and be better than whom I was! When I was little I loved to run…

The track season was the hardest most adrenaline filled thing i’ve ever partook in. Everyday at practice we’d run probably two miles total, and that was just the sprinters. The long distance probably ran four or five. Track meets were always very intense, you could feel the electricity in the air. There was a dash of suspense also, it’s suspenseful because you can only do four events, and track meets were about six to seven hours long, and one sprint event only takes like literally a minute.…

So although it was “just” a half marathon, it was still going to be a challenge. As it turned out, she is actually a faster runner than I am, which just compounded the challenge. Still, I had conquered taller mountains than this. It was almost a nonchalant attitude, although deep inside I knew I had my work cut out for me. After all, I was the bragging marathon guy.…

Hi, everyone My nameGavin and I am a fourth year Sociology major Music Industry minor. My favorite city would have to be Boston, this being because I not only have family there, but have also had some amazing vacations to the city that really allowed me to experience it beyond just tourism. Being able to go back so often over the years has formed a memorable impression in my mind when I think of the place where my family comes from, along with the city that I was able to explore so thoroughly as a kid and watch my mom cross the finish line of the Boston Marathon several times. I find it interesting how family ties definitely make a difference in your impression of an area, but more than this are the positive memories I made during my own trips…

On the morning of April 15, 2013 the 117th running of the Boston Marathon was scheduled to start at 0932 hours with the top women runners starting first and then followed by the top men runners and the first wave of thousands of other runners to start the race at 1000 hours. Then at 1020 hours and 1040 hours the remaining waves of runners would start their attempt at this 26.2 mile marathon. Later that afternoon at approximately 1429 hours the first of two pressure cookers bombs detonated with the second bomb detonating just seconds after the first. These bombs were homemade and designed to inflict as much damage and carnage as possible as they were filled with shrapnel like nails, ball bearings, and other materials and were hidden in ordinary…

It wasn’t until mile 11.5 where I felt fatigued and started to realize that my fast start had caught up to me. Many runners I’ve met on the trail call this feeling, “hitting the wall.” I had completely run out of gas as I climbed the largest hill of the day. My breathing had increased significantly and I felt like giving up. These are the moments in running that I never forget.…
