In the development of Rock ‘n’ Roll, groups began to organize and fight to censor music that was “indecent”. To be safe, record companies and radio stations responded by becoming more mainstream and appealing to the concerns of adults (Altschuler, 2003, P. 75).…
Hi Dianne - I met with my team about the education piece typos. It was our error, not the Copy Shop. Three team members proofed the piece in addition to the Copy Shop designer?!? The key factor was Kate’s departure and the change in the systems we had there. Kate is an excellent proofer and we were relying her for that function too heavily.…
It began to tradition and take off into what we know as rock n roll in the early 1950s. Expressing the “yes,” Jody Pennington believes that the emergence of rock and roll along with new forms of consumerism expressed the inner conflict between conservative and rebellious forces. As the “no,” J. Ronald Oakley argues that although lifestyles of…
Analysis paper 2 Magazines are one of the more common ways for people getting current news, whether those people be adults, teenagers or even young kids, they all have magazines that are aimed toward a specific age bracket. Some of the more risqué ads are showing up more and more in all different types of magazines. Fashion magazines are one of the more common types to have the revealing or controversial ads, such as in 2007 Dolce and Gabbana released an ad (see back page) that generated a lot of controversy all over the world. Using Psychoanalytic Criticism, this ad can be analyzed by using the ideas that Berger brings up in his book.…
While scanning through the radio, one might hear samples of songs by Florida Georgia Line, Eminem, Bob Marley, and Led Zeppelin in quick succession. Not surprisingly, we are able to easily identify what type of radio station we are listening to after only a few seconds (just enough time for a few lyrics and chords to be played). To help provide deeper insight as to why this is possible, Jennifer C. Lena extensively studied the idea of musical genres as a way to help organize and understand the relationship between different pieces of music.…
I usually find satisfaction when an example of comedic wit comes to light. The art of sarcasm, and the structure of satire have never ceased to amuse me. Although, when this specific brand of “humor” comes about, I sit back not to marvel at the thought or eloquence of the speech, but to restrain my own deeply rooted antipathy. When these graceless, crude masses shove their way into conversation, I watch in disdain as they merely beg for the attention of their audience. My muscles tense and cringe while my fingers curl reflecting my desire to retreat from an area so comically contaminated.…
The character Connie in Joyce Carol Oates short story “Where Are Going, Where Have You Been?” has a lot of issues. The problems Connie has with her social life, family, and the people that she talks to come to control her future which anticipates the development of her character, this correlating to her unfortunate death. The Bob Dylan song “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue,” perfectly describes her situation which was the inspiration for Oates's story. In 'Where Are You Going Where Have You Been' music is a big influence on Connie and Friend specifically rock ‘n' roll music. Throughout this story, there are plenty of references to music becoming a lifestyle and characters mimicking their favorite artists' clothing trends.…
Last class, my group members and I agreed upon a final genre for our magazine, gladly it was the photography magazine that won the battle. As a group's we started discussing and brainstorming, I made sure to jot all their ideas (pictured below) for possible names, sections, table of contents of the magazine. In the picture we decided on four different sections that each edition of the magazine will include: featured photographer, location feature, behind picture, and photography technology. I have chosen to do the technology section, since, I came up with what I believe is an interesting article topic "how Instagram has become a platform for photographers to display their work," the idea came to me when I saw my uncle's girlfriends latest Instagram…
In the book All Shook Up: How Rock ‘n’ Roll Changed America, by Glenn Altschuler, touches on the development of rock ‘n’ roll between 1945 and 1955 cautiously observing that it is a “social construction not a musical conception (Page 27).” This definition of rock ‘n’ roll gives him space to focus on arguable topics much as exploration, and, in some cases, combining of differing styles, cultures, and social values. In the book the first three chapters focus on those argued areas by looking at generation differences, race, and sexuality. In his discussion of race, he obscures the traditional view that white artists did damage to African American artists when he says that in some a way it helped lift them by giving them more radio time and publicity.…

Directed towards the visual presentation of Glamour magazine, the main objective of the research is to determine, ‘to what extent are black women represented’ as well as ‘in what manner are they portrayed’. This journal acknowledges the undeniable influence the images depicted in the various issues of glamour magazine have on its audience. Even though magazines do not tell their readers who they are and need to be, they do contribute to the framework in which they develop and make up their social identity. In the context of a ‘new’ South Africa (Post-Apartheid) where a cultural shift needs or rather is taking place, this is the interim where previously marginalized groups finally get an opportunity to be recognized in their own unique and…
Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…
Altschuler skillfully locates the prime issues that arose during the creation of Rock ‘n Roll. Altschuler’s book is a sound recollection of American history that explores the deeper influence of rock that plagued many parents. While also exploring how the birth of rock music changed the way people think and feel. Althsuler distinctly shows his intellect of the subject matter through his extensive exploration of its history by quoting critics both past and present. Altschuler was able to extract facts and evidence through critical primary sources such as newspapers, books, articles, psychologist, sociologist and records.…
Counter culture, emancipation and liberation are the characteristics of the Disco era. No complications and a carefree attitude defined Disco. Individualism as well as empowerment were at the forefront of the movement, characterized in songs like “I will survive” By Gloria Gaynor or the Village people “I am what I am”. The age of Discotheques 1974 thru 1981, arguably, originated in the underground gay clubs of New York.…
Throughout its years of prevalence in the popular music industry, the disco genre has always polarised opinions. The subject of some quite literally explosive protests, many have hated disco for its supposed vapidity and homogeneity, and few have defended it. I will assert that the “disco sucks” movement was a populist declaration of difference and supposedly superior taste, musical purism built on racist, homophobic and hyper-masculine ideologies. My essay will be based on ideas from Richard Dyer’s In Defence of Disco (originally published in Gay Left magazine, 1979), as well as more recent writings analysing Dyer’s work.…
