Personal Narrative: My Lower Middle Class

Improved Essays
When I was younger I would consider myself lower middle class. My dad was the main provider in the family. My mom only worked to get out of the house. We had enough to eat. We had cable television, a small house; not enough bedrooms, not enough bathrooms. We had an Atari 2600. My richer friends had Intellivision or ColecoVision. We had the Commodore 64, and when I grew up my brother gave me his old Zenith PC. Mainly we had what we needed even though we never had enough personal space. One thing that reminds me that we were lower middle class mentality was college wasn’t important. My college fund ending up being $700. That didn’t even pay the first semester. Work was always considered more important in my family, even if it offered

While this may be true, I highly doubt that my parents would classify themselves in this category. I believe that the cause of this lack of confidence in middle class families comes from the terrible condition of the economy and debt we are in, which makes everyone, even wealthier families, to doubt their assets. This confusion continues in the media, which is shown by The New York Times and Pew Research center having such drastically different reports on the middle class. All in all I think that it is difficult to distinguish who is in the middle class because people will have different definitions depending on their own personal financial situations. The one thing that “middle class” families can agree on, however, is that even if the data seems to be more promising, the current economic status has hurt all ends of the…

Even though I applied for financial aid I was denied. I came to learn that the federal formula was weighted not only by income but also by assets. So my parent’s small nest egg, a modest home with sundry repairs to come and a mortgage to be paid every month for the next ten years, counted against me. I’d attend classes during the early morning hours, late afternoons, evenings and weekends as long as it didn’t interfere with my work hours. When breaks came around, while some of my friends were off on vacation or volunteering in faraway countries, I worked extra hours.…

With the nation in heavy debate over the passage of the new Republican tax plan, attention is drawn yet again to wealth inequality in America. Regardless of the most efficacious solution to balancing the American budget, members of all socioeconomic classes are under scrutiny. Tensions are as high now as ever with the upper one percent owning nearly forty percent of the nation’s wealth, and the bottom fifth owning zero or negative wealth. In times like these, the barbarity of human nature is revealed, and prejudices are thinly veiled.…

The middle class. It’s exactly how it sounds. The middle of the socio economic ladder and what a majority of the United States working class is located. This class is what shaped me into the man I have become and continuing to grow as today. The middle class lifestyle affected me in ways such as I wasn’t able to be with my mom and dad as much, we had just enough to get what we needed, and it laid the ground work for the work ethic that I have now and continue to build on today.…

My family represented the lower middle class of the social hierarchy. Specifically, we were part of the working class of society. My mother worked as a nurse’s aide at Flushing Hospital for many years while my father worked as an attendant for a BP gas station in Fresh Meadows. Both working positions did not pay much. My mother was being paid 10 dollars and hour while my father was being paid 9 dollars an hour.…

Every individual, whether they like to believe it or not, has a very specific set of beliefs and ideals concerning gender roles, and what part they should play in our own lives. While some of us have to dig deeper than others to reach these gender role biases, they are present in everyone and act as the underlying basis through which we color our everyday view of the world. Upon introspection, I began to realize that for me personally, the beliefs and the ideals concerning the role of each gender that surrounded me growing up truly helped mold the way in which I view gender today- specifically in regards to the balance of work and care in a family unit. My immediate family—my mother Marion, my father Jeff, and my older brother Brian— made…
