Personal Narrative: My Love With Cheerleading

Improved Essays
It all started when I was nearly eight years old, the year of 2009. I had been doing gymnastics since I was two years old and I loved it. The practices, coaches, teammates, getting ready for the big weekend, and mostly leaving all the hard work on the floor. While at practice, I found myself watching the cheerleaders instead of focusing on my gymnastics. I loved watching the girls be thrown into the air and flip at the same time and I knew I wanted to try it and be the best one out there. My gym had an open cheer clinic and I decided to attend and try it out. I got to be thrown by the big girls and learn how to tumble just like I imagined, and that’s when I fell in love with cheerleading. I tried several different All-Star gyms, but none were perfect for me. After trying four different gyms, we finally found a forever gym at Fury Athletics. From April to June, my new team was working hard for the upcoming season to start in November. On June 18, 2017, I was playing on a slip n’ slide with my cousin and brother. When I was ready to go down the first time, I took two steps and slid onto my back and then rolled over to my stomach so my hands and arms were above me. My left pointer finger got caught in a hole and we heard a loud pop. My mom rushed me to the emergency room to get x-rays. The x-ray technician told us that he has never seen anything like it before. He also said he thought that I jammed my finger, broke the bone in the hand connecting that finger, and that bone twisted all within the blink of an eye. The next week, I visited the sports medicine doctor at Children’s Mercy Kansas City and they gave me a cast for six weeks. When I came back after what felt like forever, the doctor told me that it still was not healed and she wanted me to see a surgeon. So, I did and in fact, I did need surgery and I would not be able to cheer until December, which is halfway through the competition season for All-Star Cheer. I was devastated and wondered if I would ever be able to get back to where I was and farther. Visiting the Sports Medicine department every month grew my interest in nursing and …show more content…
This group was amazing because everyone reminded each other that it would get better, and injuries are minor setbacks to major outcomes in the future. I have learned from my injuries that life is always going to give you challenges and you need to work harder when you come back to prove to yourself and others that you can do it. I feel my challenges in cheer are a reward because I gained new passions along the way for things I would not have never experienced without being injured. I am currently enrolled in the EMT class next year and I am a leader as a student trainer after school every day. I feel that all the challenges I have overcome has lead me to pursue a medical career and help other athletes that have been in the situations I have been in. I also want to encourage people to be strong, positive, and fight for their passion like I

I began to ask over and over again if I could still try out, no one knew how badly I wanted to be on the Varsity team even with my leg completely discombobulated. The trainer told me I’d be fine and recover in enough time , which I later found out he was just saying so I could stay calm, but the truth was my leg wouldn’t fully be healed for months. After much persuasion from everyone around me I decided to let the trainer pop my patella back in so I wouldn’t have to go to the hospital.
