By the time I sprinted onto the field for the start of the Jefferson Cup soccer final I had mentally prepared myself for the fierce showdown ahead. I had been playing soccer for most of my short life, giving up all other sports to concentrate on being a top player. In fact my whole family was committed to the game, so I guess you could say that I eat, sleep, and breathe soccer. I sure hoped that all my hard work would be translated into a big win that day. As I readied myself for the refs whistle to announce the start of the game, the hair on my neck stood straight up, and the adrenaline rushed through my body, filling every vein and artery.…

As I was, once again, sitting on the bench watching my fellow teammates play baseball against another team. I thought to myself, I loved playing football and wrestling, all of my experiences during those seasons were awesome... and then came baseball season. The only sport which I have grown to hate. As I continued to think I began to realize the head coach completely destroyed my love for baseball. I am like a son to my football and wrestling coaches.…

Throughout my short life journey, soccer has been an enormous part of my life. I began playing soccer at a young age; this is the point in my life when I fell in love with the sport. As I grew older soccer became less of a hobby, and more of a lifestyle. Today, I am literate in the sport of soccer, because I have proficient skills, and a firm understanding of the game. I consider myself very soccer savvy, however the most important literacies I have acquired from soccer were the life skills of hard work, dedication and perseverance.…

I love the sport of football and I always will. There is no doubt in my mind that this sport is the best one in the world. There are people though that do think otherwise. It does bother that some people don’t like sports and especially when it’s about football. Football requires a lot of attitude, discipline and the right state of mind, not everybody can go through it, it’s tough, it is tiring, but at the end it still gives me feelings that I can’t express, the victory, knowing that those practices under the hot sun were worth it, you don’t play for yourself, you play for your brothers on that field, hot or cold, raining or snowing, you give your best for them because they try the best for you.…

The roar of the engine sends my heart racing as I pull out on to the track, one lap around and we are off, trucks at my side as we glide around the turns. The slick dirt pulling my back end around I move my hands, my automatic controls, the only thing keeping me from spinning out. It’s funny really because clichés aren’t my thing, however, at times idioms are just the thing to describe a situation or time period in one’s life, for instance the saying that “life is a roller coaster” couldn’t be more fitting for my life. The ups and downs, the highs and the lows, the twists and turns, life is just one big adrenaline rush and at times I feel I’m a junking, addicted to life.…

Without soccer, I would not know how to tell my story. I didn't have much free time for soccer teams when I was young because I had to take care of my 5 younger brothers when my mom wasnt home. But in sixth grade our neighborhood was full of Latinos that loved soccer, so that is how I started to become more passionate about it. Our neighborhood did not have a nice field. It didn't have goals or markings, it was pretty much dirt and grass.…

I never thought there would be a day that I could not play soccer again until April 14th, 2016. Ever since I was three, I lived with a ball at my feet and fell deeper and deeper in love with the sport. I played on 3 to 4 soccer teams at a time and dreamed of going on to play professionally when I got out of highschool. That all changed with one doctor’s appointment. I had been experiencing pain in my hip…

From the time I was six years old, soccer consumed my life. I started at a recreational level, advanced to a competitive division, and eventually on to high school. I’ve put countless hours into learning the game. I never thought my soccer career would include coaching until one summer when two friends and I signed up to coach a recreational soccer team of nine year-old girls. Nevertheless, I fought through that challenge and succeeded in discovering that football was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Coming from a South American culture, soccer was very important to dad. When I was young, he would tell me stories of how people from distant cities or even neighboring countries came to his town just to watch the game that day. Soccer found such a deep spot in my father’s heart that he was destined to have a child whom he could pass down his passion to. Finally, around his mid-twenties I was born.…

The sport in its entirety is what I came to love. So, I’m still following a soccer-centric path as much as possible. Along the way, I guess my passion wasn’t seen by only me, later giving me the opportunity to become my school’s varsity team’s videographer, something I’ll never be able to fully express my gratitude for. It’s gotten to the point where bringing up the sport to friends is just verbal diarrhea for them. Yet, they’ve never gotten fed up, and that’s just it.…
