Improved Essays
My love for reading and writing began at a young age, although, it was short lived. When I was in elementary school, I always looked forward to writing stories in my journal about the various topics my teacher created. I learned to read and write by sitting at a table in my living room, tracing the letters of the alphabet on a small piece of paper, and trying my best to pronounce the foreign letters in front of me. Reading has made me into the person I am today by allowing me to have many experiences in my life.

I would say that I have become an excellent reader over the years. In sixth grade, I remember when I would compete against my friends to see who could read the most words correctly in one minute. Also, reading allowed me to become

I have been reading ever since I could remember. I was read to when I was little as well. I do not recall learning to read, only that when my mother sat me down to start learning how to read, I already knew how. All throughout elementary school, I participated in the Accelerated Reader (also called AR) program. I loved it because you would read books, and then takes quizzes on those books.…

Beginning from grade school through middle and high school, we learn how to read and write as we grow. More importantly, we learn how to grab and hold onto many things; the illusions that we aim to achieve, called dreams. The drive to push and better yourself to grasp onto unexpected possibilities, we call opportunities. The belief and confidence that you hold within you, we call faith. Independence as your hope, in all experiences that you’ll be able to make something towards your future.…

Now I could lie and make up stuff that made me like reading and writing but I see no point in that. Honestly I don’t have a lot of memories of reading and writing from when I was a little kid and I can tell you now that football hasn’t helped me at remembering those memories either. With that being said I do remember some memories, some are good and also bad.…

When I think of the word literacy, the first thing that comes to mind is vocabulary. I think of literacy as the amount of vocabulary an individual has in their mind. You need a wide variety of vocabulary in order to be sufficiently successful at reading and writing. The dictionary may say that the definition is the ability to read and/or write, but without vocabulary both of those are nearly impossible to do because vocabulary is the foundation for all reading and writing. When I look back on my life and try to think of things that helped shape me to become the reader/writer I am today, I can find many things.…

Until high school, I considered myself to be a very slow reader and I was always the last one to finish a test. This made me very insecure and embarrassed throughout my schooling, but I also think that it pushed me to work harder at finishing my tests quicker. I started to occasionally read in my free time during middle school. I always enjoyed reading series of books as a teenager, but now I enjoy reading books by the same author one after the other.…

A girl at school once asked me, “How are you in this constant state of reading?” I laughed because the answer is simple: I love to read. I chose books as a symbol because reading and literature is very important to my culture and my family. When my father was young, his grandmother used to read to him every day, and my father did the same for my siblings and I. Ever since I was a little girl I have loved to read, and I own many books that I keep on shelves.…

Trying to truly remember when I learned to read is kind of difficult especially starting at very young age. I do remember my grandmother telling me that my reading skills were very good compared to others who started out like I did. When my siblings heard about how good my reading skills were, they encouraged me to read more books so I could get more practice. Since I was always around my grandmother, reading had become interesting…

When I Learned to Read and Write. I first started reading and writing in preschool, my teacher was very helpful and did everything she could do to help me achieve goals, and become who I am today. When I was younger I would pretend that I could read and I would read to all of my toys. In preschool, my teacher saw me trying to read so she came over to me and started to help me sound out the words and form the sentences so that I could read. The first book I read was Dr.Seuss’ “Green, Eggs and Ham.”…

When I was little, before I could read, I visited my grandparents house in rural South Dakota. My family usually visited on Sundays after church where we would eat the meal my grandma had prepared, after which my grandpa would always read a devotion. I loved hearing my grandpa read. His voice was calming and deep, his words flowed together, only interrupted by the occasional pause to clear his throat. I loved hearing him read so much I began to grab all the books I could find in the little cupboard in the kitchen to have him read to me.…

My Reading Life My first memory of reading was probably at about age four when I could actually read a book on my own. I never was a big reader even back then, I would usually just look at the pictures. I remember growing up and going through school I always had to read twenty to thirty minutes for homework. I would always pick simple books with words I knew and probably below my level of reading.…

The first time I encountered writing and reading and generally enjoyed the idea of both was around my early years in elementary school. I was one of those kids that hung out in the library and just read for the fun of gaining knowledge on things I didn’t know or thought about. Growing up In Adelphi, Maryland my grandmother would take me to the local library every two weeks so, I was always occupied by reading. I learned how to check in and out books and was privileged enough to have my own library card. My grandmother always explained to me and my younger sister how important reading is and how far education can get you; expectually will me being a young black male.…
