Personal Narrative: My Love For Basketball

As a third generation Lakers fan, loving basketball is in my blood. When I was little, Dad used to explain basketball to me when we watched NBA games together. As I grew older and my knowledge of the sport expanded, Dad and I would discuss trades, scrimmage in our backyard, and debate who would win the championship that year. My passion for basketball intertwined with my enthusiasm for academics when I took a debate class in seventh grade. My first topic, I decided, was to debate why Byron Scott was the best replacement for legendary Lakers’ head-coach Phil Jackson after Jackson retired.

When my classmates’ immediate response to my topic was “What Are You Talking About?! You’re A Girl, You Couldn’t Possibly Be Interested In Sports!” my thirteen-year-old self felt like I was shoved into a tumultuous ocean when I didn’t know how to swim. Every demeaning “Girls Can’t Understand Basketball! Basketball Is Only For Boys!” sunk me deeper. I was drowning, suffocating from immediate disregard and stereotypical underestimation because of my gender.

Fortunately, I had parents that refused to allow me to do so. They scolded me for even considering being peer-pressured, explaining that being a girl should never be a hindrance, that my capabilities are limitless, and that I can do whatever my heart desires as long as I work for it. Fueled by my parents’ encouragement and my love for the sport, I burnt the midnight oil developing an evidence-fortified thesis, researching and cross-referencing statistics, authoring a persuasive speech, and rehearsing a convincing

Like all children all I ever wanted was to be big and do big people things. I engaged in a few family members that I would look up to and try everything they did. I use to pretend to go grocery shopping and being a parent at times. At the age of eight, I had worn the worst pain ever and that was watching my five, year old brother getting hit by a car while trying to cross the street riding a bicycle that had a loose chain. I remember him trying to get up and get to me, but a few adults that had witnessed the accident had told him to lay down.…

Since I was a little girl I’ve always liked sports, I like to run, sweat and have physical activities outdoors. I remember when I was in 5th grade, after school many students will play different sports, I really liked basketball and saw some boys in the afternoon playing. I stared at the boys playing for a while, they were having so much fun. They had two teams, I approached and asked them if I could play in one of the teams, they all stared at me for a minute like if I was a crazy person. One of the boys, apparently the leader of the group told me that they had a “No Girls Allowed” rule and walked away without even letting me say a word.…

I imagine many great leaders have tiny moments early on in their lives that nudge them towards their destinies. I hope that in the future I will be able to tell the story of how sexism and ultimate Frisbee became my moment. In my sophomore year of high school, I became the only girl who elected to play ultimate Frisbee during gym. Being the lone female , I came to know some small measure of the isolation faced by women who have blazed the trail into male-dominated institutions.…

A block plan that I would develop would incorporate my love of sports and my intended major of economics. For my three and a half week course, I would run a class titled Sports and Economics. I would break down the course by studying the early years of the NFL in week one which were 1920-1934, the middle years which go from 1935- 1970, and finally the present years which go from 1971- until now. In week one, I would cover the creation of the NFL and the financial impact it had on the economy during the time period. I would discuss the cost to attend a game in the 1920s, the startup costs to run a team, and the media marketability of each team.…

As a girl, the phrases, “you play like a girl” or “you’re a girl, you can’t do that” have always been words that are casually just thrown around, yet it causes flames to come out of my ears. Starting when I was about three, I was a sporty kid always running around. I liked to play soccer with the boys teams, since they were much more physical and would roughly push each other on the hard ground rather complaining when a nail got broken, or hair got pulled. I liked to play baseball rather than softball because I could throw a baseball with much more force than I could ever throw a softball, it was like a speeding semi truck on a highway. I enjoyed playing basketball even though I knew I was, and probably always would be, the shortest one on…

Since being enacted in 1972, Title IX has increased female participation levels exponentially (NCWGE, 2013). Female athletes of all ages are healthier, more academically successful and have higher self esteem than non-athletes. In addition, young girls who participate in sports and regular physical activities exhibit enhanced motivation, improved mood states and lower levels of depression and anxiety. (Stewart,2000) In 1972 only 4% of girls played high school sports, in 2012, some forty years later, that number has now reached 33%, these numbers show an incredible increase due to the opportunities now available to young women.…

I used to be a shy and quiet girl but since joining the summer camp I started to socialize and have friends. After two months of learning basketball, I began to like it. Then, I started playing basketball in high school as part of my school’s team and I’ve been playing ever since. Society has a lot of control over what sports girls are ‘allowed’ to play, based on how that sport supports the female athlete stereotype. Girls tend to participate less in contact sports such as football or hockey, and more in sports that make the player seem more graceful such as figure skating or gymnastics (Kauer, 2006). These stereotypes restrict girl from testing the waters and playing sports that they may enjoy, and they might never know their true potential in that sport. Furthermore, this stereotype not only applies to contact sports but to extreme sports as well. These sports don’t allow women to show the feminine attributes that society assumes women should have.…
