Personal Narrative: My Lifeguard At The Swimming Pool

It was another hot and sunny day as I went to wipe the sweat dripping from my forehead for what seemed like the one hundredth time that day. I glanced at the clock in panic and realized the pool was opening in thirty minutes, and I was crunched for time. I had been lugging coolers filled with ice water to various stations around the pool, and at this point it took every bit of self control not to dump the cold water on myself. All I could think about was how to relieve myself from this heat wave.

As a lifeguard at the swim club, my responsibilities include making sure the facilities are ready before opening, and making sure the patrons are safe while using the facilities once the swim club opens. Preparing the swim club involves a lot of manual labor such as moving coolers of ice, moving chairs and tables, hosing down different sections of the pool, etc. After these tasks are completed, there is one thing left to do: clean the actual pool itself. On this particularly hot day I was more than eager to volunteer when my boss asked, “Who wants to get in and clean the pool?”

A pool, mainly the one I work at, is a place that I found myself gravitating towards as the pressure of senior year at school and fall basketball grew. Suspending underwater, everything seemed crystal clear—no sounds, no worries, and no responsibilities. Swimming creates a feeling unlike anything else, even if it is only for seconds at a time.
