Personal Narrative: My Life In New England

Decent Essays
Coming from a small town down south, opportunities were not always present. Living with a single mom of two there was never time for me to focus on what I wanted to do. The future never seemed this close, stepping into adulthood without a plan was disheartening. I slowly slipped into the wrong crowd and made decisions I wasn’t proud of. I left North Carolina in 2014 to live in Massachusetts with my dad and stepmom before continuing my descent down the rabbit hole. The past two years living here has provided me with amazing new opportunities. I am thankful to have had the chance to somewhat start a new life in New England. Although i have been more than ready to take on the big cities, I was never quite sure on how i wanted to proceed in life.

Transitioning occurs in all stages of life whether it’s from a baby crawling to walking, or an elder moving from their home to a retirement facility. One transition in life that most of us face is the evolution from high school to a college or a university. With moving into a new phase of my life I was optimistic about the difficulties of becoming comfortable with the population, the diversity, and the college life in general that Wayne State provides. I made the leap to a big city called Detroit from a small city called my home. I live in a small urban city, downriver, called Wyandotte.…

“I can't wait until I get to leave for my vacation tonight!” I exclaimed. It was the summer of 2014 and I was counting down the hours until I left on my Cooperstown vacation. I was going to visit New Jersey, New York City, and Pittsburgh on my way to Cooperstown. My parents couldn’t get me to Pittsburgh, so, I went with one of my teammates.…

As the daughter of parents who love to travel, I’ve had the pleasure of travelling across Canada and America as well as a few other countries from a young age. I have visited the loud and bustling streets of Tokyo and the ethereal gardens in Kyoto, stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon, walked the strip in Las Vegas, and watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean in Martha’s Vineyard. Although I should be able to look back on a childhood filled with events and memories from trips, I find it difficult to recall most vacations without a visual prompt. When I flip through old family photo albums, I don’t recall much more than what is shown in their pages. The outdated clothing, the people, and the locations are seen in the images, and therefore…

My childhood in New York City was very difficult for me. I grow up in a predominantly Hispanic Dominican decent neighborhood in the upper Manhattan area called Washington Heights. Washington Heights in the early 1990’s was the heart of the drug trade. At one point in the 1990’s it was considered one of the worst neighborhoods to raise a child. I remember in the news, the news anchor reported that New York City was recognized as the crime capital in the 1950's through the early 1990's.…

I had many powerful experiences during our field study trip to Cape Cod. It was a wonderful experience, and I learned so much in those five days. However, there were a few salient experiences I had that stood out among the others. These three moments combined cumulated into an overall experience that had a significant and lasting impact on my future thesis goals.…

It was my first time in America. In 2015, I moved with my family permanently from India. Had few issues moving but managed to solve those issues without any difficulties. I had no clue how it would be; I had heard about it, read it in the newspaper and saw it in movies but never seen it with my eyes. I was pumped to know about how each and everything used to function, how different the American system is from the Indian system?…

Have you ever wondered as a little kid as what an ideal world would look like in America? I always thought that the world would be a perfect utopia, flying cars, no crime and food that you can put in the microwave and it instantly cooks. Growing up and getting older, I soon realized that most adults including me don’t look for this in an ideal world. I have come to realize that in my lifetime none of these things I dreamt of as a kid will happen. There are countless flaws in America that is hindering the perfect world.…

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…

This morning was wearisome, I had to examine George Burroughs who once was minister of our village. The anger and frustration I felt towards this individual trained me. Several girls accused him being the "ring leader"of the witches, a virtual priest of the devil. I knew there was something wrong with him due to his odd religious beliefs and practices. I was so wearisome of him I moved his presence else where to a Boston jail, making my day very…

Since i was 6 years old i have had two lives. One is confined to the months of june through august, the months of fireflies and bikinis. I live my summer life as a free spirit on lake Winnipesaukee NH. I wake up at 5 am, watch the sunrise, drink green tea, venture through the mountains of New Hampshire, dance in the rain, and spend days painting at the end of the dock. I swim in the lake with my siblings until our shoulders burn and eat melting ice cream cones until our stomachs hurt, loving every minute.…

Growing up in Maine had so many advantages from the beautiful scenery to the unique qualities Mainers have. I can't say that I'm not blessed to have grown up in such a beautifully scenic place, but I can't say it's been easy. I'm originally from land-locked Indiana. I moved to Maine when I was younger with my parents and brother and as much as I love being from a different place it's been hard growing up without a close family in a state so closely tied together with their families. Growing up in Maine, especially Mid-Coast Maine, you know that all of the surrounding families have lived there for generations, everybody knows everybody, cousins go to school together, and siblings work together.…

I was born in the United States but in a weird twist of fate instead of being raised here for most of my childhood I was raised in Mexico. I lived in a very tiny town in Mexico with my mother for about half the first 10 years of my life. The other half I spent with my dad when I could come and visit him in the united states. I don’t remember most of my childhood and part of me thinks I chose not to. From a young age I can remember always wanting to help others understand. Understand me and understand the life that was happening around them. I had a somewhat nomadic childhood, meaning I never went to the same school or lived in the same country for more than three years at a time. As a result I have always been able to tell more than what is in front of me. I am good at reading people and getting to know them well, because my relationship building had always been so accelerated.…
