I have been able to experience freedom of mind through learning to be accountable for my actions at an early age and if I made a bad choice, it could lead to deadly consequences, and good choices led me to amazing experiences. I learned a freedom of education that most don’t get to experience through living life in nature and its habitat. I learned how to survive and how to stay safe in an environment that most would die in, because they don’t know what’s in the desert or how to find what’s needed to survive. I learned a freedom of self-reliance; I know in my life I have to work for what I want. I don’t depend on others to do for me because I know how to do it for myself. People today are so reliant on computers, social media and entitlements of the world. My personal freedoms were acquired from my life experiences and they include the freedom of an open mind, self-education and

Brownsville, Texas is the town that I was raised in and can still call home. It was rich with Mexican culture and delectable, greasy tacos but it was still an economically disadvantaged city meaning that there were never enough resources to guide students to better opportunities. Of course, I never knew I was deprived of such an apparent luxury until I came to The University of Texas at Austin. When this realization came, I became frantic because of how behind I felt. I began looking for all sorts of resources and opportunities the university had to offer.…

A mixture of mud, blood, and dust coated our bodies; to my left and right, cannonballs flew at us. Though we knew not how or when we were going to succeed, we just knew that we had to succeed. Every hardship I had gone through had led to this moment, every hardship I went through had made me become this person. I am Lafayette, and if socialising, sailing the terrifying sea, and living in Valley Forge couldn't shake me, then no British army would.…

I saw only darkness, save the faint glow of lava rocks in a small hole dug in front of me. I breathe in what should be steaming hot air, but it is dry, yet so hot. Even growing up in Tucson where the summer heat can reach 110 degrees, I’ve never experienced something quite like this. I wished I was playing out in that summer heat, this felt like I was being cooked in an oven. I breathe in again, more dry air.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…

The weather plays a very large part in this memory as the air is crisp and clear with a smell of freshness.…
