Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I have grown to get use…

Many people from my hometown use the phrase, “Everything is greater in Decatur.” Decatur, GA is where I was born and raised and has been an integral part in shaping me into the young lady I am today and the woman I am becoming. Members of my family and my community have gone on to do great things outside of this city, which has provided solid proof that there are more great opportunities outside of Decatur, GA. People have left to become educators who are now teaching, guiding, and delivering necessary tools for individuals to be successful; lawmakers who are developing plans and policies to create a well-balanced and structured society; professional athletes who are working diligently to study and perfect their craft, and many other professions.…

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

Writing this gives me the opportunity to tell you what it was like when I was growing up in South Dallas. I can truly say that I enjoyed it! It wasn’t like the 9th Ward in New Orleans, Louisiana, but it was enough for me to grow up in a close knit family and a community environment that became personal among several classmates, church members, and school teachers. Also, at times, living in the hood became a nightmare. Always around 12 mid-nights, you could hear gun shots blasting like police sirens.…
