Growing up in Hawaii, you're faced with multiple fun opportunities. For my self born in Kamuela of the Big island, being in the center of the island opened up many doors to many different activities. I grew up on a long narrow road that had many bumps and pot holes up and down the entire road. At the top of the road there was a small grade hill that I would bomb with a skateboard. My house was about three quarters the way down the road.…
At the beginning of my Christmas break, I was sitting by a smoky, hot fire with some hot coco with marshmallows in it with a warm blanket on a cold day. On the second day of break, I was riding my four wheeler drifting on the icy roads trying to go get more wood for my family's fire at my grandma and grandpa's house .But when I got there and there was a big puff of smoke in the back and it smelled like a fire so I ran back there, but it was just my grandma and grandpa making a fire so they could roast marshmallows so I joined and roasted marshmallows with them then I got my wood and rode back home.…
It was 65 degrees below zero in Prudhoe Bay Alaska. I remember the bite of the gale as it swept across the frozen tundra attacking every inch of exposed skin; frostbite takes minutes to set in. An adjustable head lamp allowed us to see where we were walking in the dark Artic environment. The Sun would not be coming up for a couple of months.…
Marana, Arizona- it was a hot summer in 1982, surrounded by desert sands, cactus and Palo Verde trees where two young children of a ranch hand whose curiosity guided them on their lessons in freedom. The morning sun rises and a warm breeze is in the air, the horses are saddled and ready for the new day adventure. A refreshed brown and tan Quarter horse named Ms. Barb is waiting patiently for me, and a paint Palomino horse named ironically Paint is waiting for my brother, Mark. We will rise up to mount on the horses back and venture into the desert for today’s exploration.…
I moved myself out to South Bass Island in the middle of Lake Erie. For six months out of the year South Bass Island is a major tourist spot. I hadn’t intended to work there, I had gone to take time to myself to be able to write, but was quickly recruited. Those bartending skills I mentioned before? Yeah...…
I will give back to Hawaii by building connections with God in the communities and the cities of my home, not only with my two hands, but with my whole heart. I will also, donate to charities or to the churches enough money to help people in the community with their needs. I came to Hawaii from Marshall Island in May of 2011. I was only eleven years old at the time. I moved to Hawaii because my parents wanted me to have a better education which will help me get a job that can support my family and contribute to my country.…
Going to Hawaii What is a “vacation”? Vacation is defined as an extended period of recreation. Many people go on vacation for various different reasons.…
Hawaii, the home of white sand beaches, pro surfing, hula dances, and warm weather. If I could move to any region within the United States, I would move to Hawaii with no hesitation. Hawaii contains a prestigious hospital and the opportunity to become a surfer. Both of which of which I have always dreamed of being a part in. Nothing would make me happier than becoming an orthopedic surgeon operating out of a Hawaiian hospital working on shark attack victims and other unlucky victims who need orthopedic repair, then go straight to the beach to surf and relax for the remainder of the day.…
Journey to Florida I woke up with the glowing sun shining in my face and I realized it was time. I had been waiting for this since the first time my sister asked me to go with her, about four months ago. My sister, our friends, and I piled up in the van and we took off. It was the beginning of our journey to Panama City Beach Florida.…
A metaphor to thoroughly interpret my own cultural identity would be the coconut delicacy known as Haupia. Not only for its elegant perplexion, but for the soft clouded stature that belongs to this alien creature, which taste is only permitted to the fortunate few occupying the native islands of Hawaii. Another perplex root in the tree of my culture is Lei-making. The breathtaking row of an aligned set of flowers to form the Lei is one of the prime connections to the base of the hawaiian culture by contributing to the ancient craft itself. A more well-known phenomenon that had one of its origins among the islands of Hawaii and is still dwelled upon to this day is surfing.…
It was very cold and when 10:00 came around I wanted to get down because it was so cold and I was so cold too. We got down and went and waited until the night hunt came around.…
After anxiously waiting about fifteen minutes, our waiter arrived with three beautiful plates. He set down my plate exposing my eyes to three buttermilk pancakes perfectly placed together with a layer of fresh strawberries and a tower of fluffy whipped cream in the middle, sprinkled on top were small bits of nuts and powdered sugar. All I needed now was syrup but what syrup would I choose if there all sounded so good; From Original to Guava to Coconut to Honey Macadamia Nut to Honey Christmas Berry or Honey Rainbow Blossom. My older sister, a cousin, and I had decided we would be taking a summer trip to Honolulu, Hawaii.…
We got to Moline at night. It was in January. there was snow everywhere. It was my first time seeing snow. I was like “Holy shit” there is snow.…
As a child, I never truly appreciated most of the beauty surrounding me in my home state of Maine. When my parents said, 'We're taking a Sunday drive to Camden" I recall "reminding" them that we'd already been there and " there's nothing to see." After growing up and moving away, I realized my comments were untrue. As a child I never truly looked.…
June 18, 2015. It was a breezy Saturday afternoon and everything seemed normal. I looked out my window on the fifth story of our hotel. I saw the birds flying in the air. My family and I were on vacation in Miami, Florida.…
