Personal Narrative: My Life In Hawaii

In the islands of Hawaii, Hawaiians depended on the land, scavenging for resources to gather in order to survive. Hawaiians became accustomed to the landscape and began to learn how to farm to grow local plants, how to hunt, and fish from the local wildlife. Now days most “Hawaiians” spend time at home on their ipad or in front of their TV or computer screens. Even though there's the ocean to swim in, and the mountains to hike and relax, people still avoid this. Caught up in the fast pace lifestyle of businesses, they forget what's really out there. I personally spend a lot of time on my computer out of the week but when I can get out to go to the beach or some place away from it all I jump at the opportunity. This summer was different, I didn't want to travel but instead I wanted to stay back in Hawaii. My family and I went down to Milolii, THE LAST FISHING VILLAGE. I felt like I was losing my connection to my roots and this was the very thing I needed. I’m a very competitive person, challenges are something I crave, so my brother and I often have feuds about who's the better diver, and who can bring up the most fish or biggest catch of the day. My Uncle Mahina, being the son of the highest and most respected kupuna knows a lot about the waters. He always had a smart remark towards us and his most famous one of all was, “You two numb nuts think that fishing is all a game?” He would often continue on to saying “If you two want to be good try and beat me!”. I dove down but that sucker seen me and took off into a hole in the rock. At this point, I remember seeing on youtube how they got it out of the hole. They jabbed it inside of the hole and coaxed it to grab the spear, as soon as it tried they would snatch it and bite the brain to kill it. Remembering this I tried it out for myself, first jabbing the hole then waiting and watching for the limbs of the tako to try and pry it out of himself. As soon as I saw those limbs rap around the spear at one last attempt to live I grabbed all eight of his tentacles. Pulling the spear just to see it looking back at me, taking no time as one of the tentacles came free. I pulled it closer to bite into its brain when i felt more of its slimy grotesque limbs sucking onto my skin. In a rush, I bit down as hard as I could until I heard a “pop”. That “pop” signified my victory and as I made my way back to shore I got some koles and a uhu. I couldn't stop thinking about the way my brother would react to me when I got out and rubbed it in his face. As I got out, I brought my catch to them to show off and just as I imagined, I got the exact reaction I expected from my brother. I knew I won and I would forever have the title of the best diver in my family until one of my brothers can get the taco eye, but until then i'll hold that
