During Michigan winters I look forward to February, because it’s filled with celebration of my culture. Black History Month evokes a strong sense of pride. However, since entering high school every February has been a greater disappointment than the last as Black History Month was nothing more than a fleeting thought and a tokenized moment. Feburary of my junior year began without a single poster, announcement, or even small speech. So, I decided to lead a project to bring recognition.…

“Well, one, you’re African-American” are the words so carefully chosen by my high school theology teacher in describing why I should get into college. Not because of my intellect or my drive, but because of what I have no control over and more often than not, the future of my success would be determined by those judgements. As a young black girl, the product of a single-mother and financial instability, statistics show that the odds are against me, that my future will be the pinnacle of economic depravity and dependence. That will not be my future and only those with such shortsightedness are not able to see the passion and drive I possess, that I refuse to become another statistic.…

When I was in six grade, my PE coach made it clear to me that I wasn't alone, and I could accomplish anything I put the time and effort into. He was the football coach for Atascocita middle school. An African American in his late 20s, very friendly, and Guidable when it came to his students. On the first day of school as a new student with no knowledge of the language, I was extremely terrified to transform from speaking different language, and having a similar set of friends into an inexperienced world and dissimilar students who I had absolutely nothing in common with. Fortunately, I had my brother as a personal translator throughout the year.…

Preceding my father death, my parents determined that it was important as the only child to be the Executor of his Estate in an effort to propel me into manhood and the realities of life. My parents’ decision regarding my role after my father’s death was programmed and classical because they knew this honor would instill the strength, courage and pride needed to survive in this world as a young African-American man. During this time, I learned the significance of properly planning, organizing and managing the history of a person‘s entire life; therefore, I am thankful to my parents for trusting me…

Everyone knows the YMCA song, but everyone doesn’t have the same connection to it that I do. This building never contained one life changing event for me, but it has been a pivotal place in my life. A place I’ve referred to as home many times, the YMCA has shaped who I am as a man. This pivotal spot is where I suffered my first traumatic injury, changing how I do things for the rest of my life; but also was the place I went to when coping with family incidents. This institution, in particular the basketball gym, helped me find myself, changing my life forever.…

I believe there are no words that can describe the African American experience from throughout 1609-1865. Although if I were to choose one word to describe African American history at the time I would it as a dark time for African Americans because many slaves were beaten to death abandoned on ships and some did not survive the ruff life of slavery. By 1850, ninety-two percent of all American blacks lived in the South, and about 95 of the 92 percent were slaves. The Societies of the North and South were very different. Pre-civil war slaves in America went through a great deal of chaos and sadness in the South.…

I have felt many pressures, race is such a big problem among black people but as community can get over the hump of being pressured into a few stereotypes. From my own personal experience being a young black man growing up in many places of black being the majority such as Detroit, Chicago, New York I felt an amazing amount of comfort around these areas. Once I move down to La Vernia Texas, being enrolled into an all white school with a lot of Mexicans and the only black people could only fit on a bench in a hallway that we called “The Black Bench” in high school, I attended La Vernia school district for 7 years from 4th grade all the way to 10th grade in high school.
