Every book I've ever read is a different combination of the same 26 letters. It is astounding to think that these 26 letters could have such a profound impact on my life. The books I read allow me to become transported into an alternative universe and understand new concepts in a way I could have never imagined. Although my journey as a reader has been filled with a vast amount of accomplishments, I have also faced trials throughout the way. These trials have allowed me to develop my skill set as a reader and to determine my preferences of writing style and genre. When my journey first began, I was not an advocate for reading. It was in fourth grade that my best friend at the time, Anna, had challenged me to a friendly competition. We would compete to see who could complete the entirety of the Harry Potter series first. Spoiler alert: I happened to win the competition. This small competition with my friend Anna launched me deeper into the world of books than I previously thought possible. This experience was the first time I remember being genuinely interested in pursuing reading on my own. From that moment on, I was eager to read any books I could get my hands on. I began going to the library weekly to check out and read new books. This newly developed love of reading especially flourished throughout middle school, when I received an award for attaining over 650 accelerating reading points. Each book is assigned a point value depending on difficulty generally ranging from 8-30 points. Due to my mass amount of points I earned fifth place out of the 200 students. Despite the fact that the types of books I am interested in has changed over time, I have always been a fan of dystopian novels and publications that contain action throughout their entirety. I am generally a bigger supporter of fiction novels, however, from time to time I really enjoy learning more information on a topic I'm interested in, such as psychology or

It felt like because whenever my class will have group reading, I would always pronounce the words wrong, and reading would always put me done. In fifth grade, I was reading at a second or third grade level, due to also having a reading disability. My resource reading teacher suggested I try reading a chapter book that was at a fifth or sixth grade level, but the chapter books she had in her classroom had no appeal to me.…

When I was in elementary school, I despised reading. I was also an absolutely terrible writer. I was so bad that I had to go to extra reading practice three times a week in a small, claustrophobic room with four other similarly challenged students. Sitting among my stacks of books with a personality molded by the stories I've lived through and information I've learned, I'm amazed at how far I've come during the past years. I can attribute this change to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.…

As I was growing up, watching all the older kids walk through the hallway carrying books in their hands gave me aspirations to becoming just like them. I was excited to start reading, I remember going to the library anywhere from two to three times a day during my “free time” in 3rd grade. Reaching my accelerated reader goal was one of the many things I enjoyed about reading, it was my motivation. I would always be the first in my class to reach my goal, and the little accelerated reader trips we were awarded with were something I always had to look forward to. As I grew older my desire to read began to disseminate.…

Her goal was to get me to enjoy reading again; she made that her personal mission.…

I was never the outstanding reader of the class as a child but when you make it into a competition with a prize at the end who isn’t motivated to read? Grade school made reading fun and exciting and motivated you with competitions. When you move on to high school you see a giant decrease in that motivation as they pile the readings higher and restrict your reading choices to a slight list. As you progress to college there is absolutely no choice on readings and a very short time frame on when you have to complete the specified readings. This is a very drastic change of the course of reading over the years and ended with the decline of my love for reading.…

The first time I began to read was in kindergarten, I don’t recall the exact moment I began reading since it was so long ago, but the first books I read were books with pictures and very little words. In about the second grade I started reading The Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne up until halfway through the fourth grade. The next series of books I fell in love with was R. L. Stine’s Goosebumps series, which lasted throughout the sixth grade. In middle school, I started to read J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. My favorite types of books are book series.…
