Personal Narrative: My Life As A Veterinarian

Improved Essays
Driving 3 hours to adopt a puppy was not how I expected to spend my Saturday morning. The constant searching to find a perfect companion for me was taxing, but completely worth it. From a young age I was surrounded by dogs, so animals were always a big part of my life. When my family adopted my chihuahua, nothing seemed to change, but at the same time everything changed. I would walk and play with my dog everyday. No matter what I always made time for her. Due to having a large amount of homework, I had to make a strict schedule that would allow me to prioritize what was most important to me: my dog. After spending the night cuddling my dog and the day learning at school, I would come home to go for a walk. I am a very driven, hard-working …show more content…
I have also always loved science. Combining the two for a profession was quite an easy task. My goal is to eventually become a Veterinarian. I believe that I can complete this goal by majoring in Biology at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Biology and Chemistry have always been interesting to me. Whether it be learning about organelles in biology class or titrations in chemistry class, I always wanted to know more. Science, in general, has always been an interest of mine. It was not until I adopted my current dog that I really knew how I could apply those interests. Animals, especially companion animals, are very important to me, so I decided to advance my knowledge of the veterinary profession by enrolling in a veterinary assisting class at my high school. I have only been in this class for a few months now, but even in this short time, I realized that business is a large part of the profession. I hope to eventually be the owner of a veterinary clinic, so minoring in a topic that is business related would be very beneficial to me. I also decided to join an FFA Chapter. Being involved in this group, as a member and treasurer, has already taught me many leadership skills that I will carry over into college and my career. Being treasurer has allowed me to discover the financial aspect of improving the environment and organizing

On March 20, 2015 my dad took my dog, Copper, a 15-year-old Basset Hound, to my veterinarian to be euthanized. Copper’s organs were shutting down and he couldn’t keep food or water down on his own. He had been at the vet for almost a week on fluids he was receiving through an IV. Copper hadn’t eaten for a couple of days as a result of him being on the IV, his breathing was loud and rapid as this was a sign that his organs were shutting down. The vet gave us a timeline that Copper wouldn’t live past winter.…

My time as a Veterinary Technician taught me many things. From how to draw shots to how to take x-rays. One of the most common lessons I learned was how to spay a female canine. Although the Veterinarian is the only one allowed to be “hands-in” during surgery, I learned a lot from watching the procedure. Surgery preparations begin the day before.…

I do have experience with fundraising, and I would like to become knowledgeable on the topics of rehab and proper horse care. I am also a certified emergency medical technican (NREMT). I believe my love for science and the medical field has been passed down to me from my Dad. Some see him as a quirky, introverted, physics major, but to me he is the person who taught me to question both the known and the unknown, and appreciate the complex yet beautiful world we live in. I have never been good at math without having to work extremely hard at it, and the seemingly scattered rules of grammar can frustrate me. The one thing I know for sure is my desire to understand how we humans work both on a mental and physiological level. I has been said to me many times throughout my life that I should go into a profession that I am truly in love with in order to live a fulfilling life.…
