"You should join DECA. I bet you'd be good at it." "What do you do?" I asked. "I don't really like business, and none of my friends are in it so I bet I wouldn't enjoy it." "It's a business club, but it's more fun than you'd expect, and the people are great. We have donuts at every meeting, and we go to the mall for the district competition. At the very least it's a fun day off from school." I joined DECA. Even though I initially joined for reasons that had nothing to do with the club itself, I ended up thoroughly loving DECA. DECA became one of my favorite parts of high school. Every year I excitedly anticipated the state competition where I could spend a few days attending fun conferences and wandering around the heart of Minneapolis. I had not expected to go, and was uncertain of whether or not I would be going even after having been told I had qualified. I would have to persuade my mother to let me fly across the country for a week by myself, and on top of that I would have to pay for the trip. My mom was thrilled to hear I qualified for the conference and gladly gave me permission to attend, but I was still nervous. I was not terribly good friends with the rest of the people going, and I had never been so far away from my family for so long before. I had never been farther away from home than Chicago. Regardless of these factors, never once did I consider not going. I knew this was a chance that I had to take. I looked at the trip as an opportunity.
