I remove my glasses to wipe the thick sweat from my brow. In this small court right now, it is just me, and my opponent. I stare him down as I bounce the green tennis ball on the ground in preparation for a serve. We have been in this match for more than an hour, and the current score is eight to six with him leading. Among the others, this match is probably the longest with a marathon of repeated deuces. My opponent is much more experience, yet I had preserved up to this point. This match is proof that my failures have raised me to be able to stand against the odds. For it was only a month ago when I began playing tennis. The first week hell. It was conditioning week that was meant to prepare our bodies for the upcoming season. Composed of two hours of intense running and body building, I broke down multiple times; I vomited twice. I was told that if I emerge pass it, anything is possible. If it was not for that hellish training, I would not be still standing. My body aches …show more content…
Once again, the ball bounces, and I breathe according to its uniform cadence. The ball stops in my hand and without hesitation I throw it into the air and it greets my racket with a resonant ponk. This time, he is prepared. The green ball launches toward him ruthlessly but he is still able to return it with complementary ponk of his own. I shot it back and we continue to rally for another minute. It becomes a battle of stamina, which brings me to a disadvantage. The ball lands and he scores. The advantage is given to him again. Tires crunched on the loose gravel parking lot as I was dropped off at my high school’s tennis courts on the first day of school. With my high school requiring a year of physical education, I opted to take the lifetime sport for I was nervous to compete for a spot on the highly competitive teams my school was known for. I was met at the court by 30 other freshmen with a mixed variety of expertise spanning from the first time to ever hold a racquet to a district ranked player. The district ranked player’s father, Mr. Weaver, was a sophomore chemistry teacher who happened to play tennis professionally in his heyday. Mr. Weaver volunteered to teach the freshman tennis team and to train them the basics before they were transferred to “the real…

One of my biggest failures that has helped lead to success was my tennis career throughout high school. Coming into high school as a freshman, the assistant coach had told me that there would be a high chance of me making varsity. I contemplated quitting tennis because it seemed pointless and time consuming. I felt like I was failing at tennis because of the build-up from the assistant coach before my freshman season.…
