Personal Narrative: My Life As A Collegiate Athlete

At the age of five, my mother and I left my threatening, drug-addicted, alcoholic father. From then on, I rarely saw him. When I did, he was on drugs and barely functioning. My friends lived with similar circumstances, and expectations were low for us. At this time, the only thing preventing me from completely giving in to my environment was athletics. Halfway through high school, and after visiting my father while incarcerated, I promised myself I would never become like him. I would escape the same environment that enabled his behavior. I was able to earn better grades and eventually receive a full scholarship to play college football. Although it is challenging, being a collegiate athlete is a rewarding experience. A routine day consists of going to 5 a.m. workouts, a veterinary internship, class, meetings, practice and then finally going home to begin studying, in addition to watching films to prepare for the upcoming game. This schedule has allowed me to develop effective time management. Athletics has taught me how to overcome adversity — from rehabbing an injury to concentrating on studying after a tough loss. Ironically, the most important lesson I have learned is that there is more to life than sports. Throughout my adolescence, athletics seemed like the only way to make it out of the environment I grew up in. Athletics has given me the opportunity to pursue a career in veterinary medicine — something I always had an interest in, but never thought I would be able to do. I also became a leader to my teammates who grew up in a similar environment as mine. As I excelled on both the field and in the classroom, I showed my teammates that there are more routes to success than professional sports. I was given the pleasure to watch how each of them had changed from the first day they arrived. This taught me to never judge or give up on

Although I am currently in pursuit of a career as an engineer, I hope to retire early into a less demanding profession, so I can return to a small community such as my hometown and volunteer as a high school track and cross country coach. If I can share the same passion for the sport, which Coach Scannella shared with me, and alter at least one young person’s life in a positive manner, then I will be satisfied with my efforts. While my aspirations lie in the somewhat distant future, I have already taken steps to bring me closer to that point. One technical aspect of reaching this dream is to be able to advance my engineering career in a timely fashion, so I can achieve my personal goals and move on to this new pursuit. Thus, I have remained focused on my schoolwork throughout high school in order to prepare myself for the challenges that await me in college.…

The scope of power and prestige was present in my summer coaching job because both Tommy and I were equal status individuals working together to complete the task which was ultimently to have the team win more games. Although I do play in a higher division of college baseball which lead me to believe that there was a high expectation of me from others involved in the organization, players on the team and parents, I do believe that tommy and I were of equal status when it came to coaching. I felt the needed to step in and perform at a higher level of coaching because of my expericene within the organization, having a better knowledge of the players on the team and as feeling the needed to really help the team when the head coach was not available…

My sunburn lines between my shorts and socks symbolized the restless, tiring hours spent out on the field. Every Tuesday and Thursday, for two and a half hours, the sun scorched my body while my legs would scrape into the ground. The cluster consisted of the seniors’ looming bodies that would go shoulder to shoulder against my own freshman self as our feet would battle for control. While this exhaustion enthralled and encouraged my game, the sprints, planks, runs, and more caused me to dread going to that grassy field every week. The humidity produced heavy, useless pants from my lungs as my throat would feel as if it was closing in from a claustrophobic nightmare.…

Numb, I couldn’t feel anything in my fingers and toes. I couldn’t even remember what I did the entire day. I couldn’t hear anything besides the ringing in my ears. I laid on the ice and was blinded by the lights in the arena. I knew it was bad, I’ve been hit before but this one was different, this is the kind where they say, it might be time to hang it up, if I had a nickel for every time some coach or some doctor said that to me, well I probably wouldn’t have to work anymore.…

On November 6, 1869, the first college football game was played by two college students from Rutgers and Princeton. It wasn’t until the 1880s that the game was given actual rules and regulations by a great Rugby player from Yale named Walter Camp. He slowly transformed Rugby into a new game we know now as American football. My favorite sport is American football.…

I honestly never thought that I would be here today. I thought That I would be a professional football player at 18, making millions and living the good life. I gotta say, I am living the good life, however, I’m not catching 70 yard touchdown passes from Peyton Manning. Back then, all I cared about was having fun and enjoying life. I ran into the first time in my athletic career that raw talent and superior experience did not allow me to squeeze by as a Sophomore. In middle school and elementary school sports, all participants exert roughly the same amount of effort, so skill is generally directly correlated to the amount of time you've been playing. In high school, I made the Varsity lacrosse team on raw talent, but I never walked onto the field during meaningful situations. Naturally, I desired playing time.…

In every high school, there are certain athletes who receive more support and attention than others. Some of these athletes receive this praise based on their athletic performance, while others receive it based on their status and financial contributions within the community. The above statement became extremely evident to me at the beginning of my high school athletic career. There were several families in the school district that were gifted financially and were able to contribute monetarily to the school. The children of these families often received more of the coaches’ attention.…

All my life I was always put down for being small. Standing at 4’11 now as a freshman in college I get comments on my height every day. So when my basketball coach at the end of my freshmen year of high school blew her high-pitched whistle stopping practice to say “Why is the shortest person on the team jumping high than all of you!” I felt the biggest swell in my chest. That moment in practice was a significant turning point in my life that proves I am capable of accomplishing anything with hard work and dedication.…
