She smiles determinedly as her hand swipes only air ― ¬¬the other player is more experienced. She shifts her feet to keep up with her quick-footed challenger and her breaths come in brief bursts while sweat runs from every pore. Her mind is focused, determined to triumph against the other team. The only sounds that enter her mind are that of the squeak of shoes and the calls of her teammates and coach. Her focus is impenetrable; thoughts of the outside world around her are prohibited. Gone are the worries over grades and homework and pressures to please her parents and to fit in with others her age. Unsure of myself at first, I was nervous throughout the beginning introductions. However, by the end of the two hours that day, I was hooked. An unquenchable thirst for practice in this new skill overtook my entire eighth grade year. I stepped into a world where I wasn't given the easy shortcuts because I was smart, I had to work for every improvement I wished to see. I fell in love with showing up every single day and pushing myself past any limitations present, both physically and mentally. I became surer of myself and the meager confidence I previously exhibited developed as I tested every limit my body had and began seeing minor improvements in my skills, derived only from the hard work and time I put into

I have played baseball ever since I was a young kid, but somehow, at seventeen I still had numerous struggles with it. You would think after my grandpa being drafted to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a Major League baseball team, and my dad getting a full ride to the University of Denver their skill would have rubbed off on me, but you would be wrong. I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

When I arrived at my enormous new high school for cheerleading auditions, I got lost. It was June, and since classes had just ended, crowds of kids filled the hallways, and I got bumped around like I did not exist. Thankfully, a cheerleader saw me and figured that I had come there for tryouts since I wore shorts, cheer shoes and a big bow in my hair. She took me to the gym where at least sixty girls had shown up to compete. The first thing I saw was cheerleaders doing high level tumbling with no fear.…

I broke my ankle my last second from last game in 8th grade running the ball and got tackled and fell hard on it breaking my tibia and fracturing my fibula and tearing all the ligaments in between. I had surgery on it.…

My sunburn lines between my shorts and socks symbolized the restless, tiring hours spent out on the field. Every Tuesday and Thursday, for two and a half hours, the sun scorched my body while my legs would scrape into the ground. The cluster consisted of the seniors’ looming bodies that would go shoulder to shoulder against my own freshman self as our feet would battle for control. While this exhaustion enthralled and encouraged my game, the sprints, planks, runs, and more caused me to dread going to that grassy field every week. The humidity produced heavy, useless pants from my lungs as my throat would feel as if it was closing in from a claustrophobic nightmare.…
