Personal Narrative: My Life As A Baseball Player

Improved Essays
As a child, I was raised amongst an athletic family where sports were always a priority within our household. From a young age, I was trained to play at the highest level and to be competitive in everything I engaged in. Although, when I was younger I participated in many sports, I had a strong passion for baseball. A passion for baseball that took me to the next level over and over again, until the next move was university baseball down south. The pressure to perform greatly increased as weekends usually spent with family in London, turned into weekends spent in some new city of the northern states. Life in Ontario during the summer quickly changed into living in an unfamiliar city each weekend; almost like packing up and moving schools as …show more content…
I was reaching my full potential at the age of 16 and started to fulfill the requirements of the university coaches on the other side of the border. Phone calls and emails about tours, visits, and practicing with the team started to occupy my life as a baseball player. Finally, the long desired success at the sport I dedicated a large portion of my life to, was within reach. I can recall the day I made, what seemed to me at the time, a major mistake. A mistake that changed the path of my life within minutes. The stands were filled with scouts with clipboards, stopwatches, and their eyes scouring the field for new talent. Picking new players out by one by one, off a list of names. As an athlete, you only get one chance to impress your future coaches. One mistake and the once reality, could become a dream …show more content…
A realization came to mind, with a question that needed an answer, “why are you here playing? Is this really what you want?”. A question that rebounded throughout my mind, demanding an answer. As stated by Lewis Thomas, “the hope is in the faculty of wrongness” (Thomas 2) which in its entirety, made sense to me at this point in time. I didn’t want to play baseball anymore, or give the majority of my time to it. The passion that once lit the desire to become great was not there anymore. It was time to move onto other aspects of my life such as academics, volunteering, and working. Something that seems so simple and normal to many people, I never had the chance to so such things to create a normalcy in my life. There was hope outside of baseball and I’m pleased to be where I am today. A mistake on the field lead me to life I actually did

Baseball: the sport where you stand around for 20 minutes and move 3 feet to the left and move 3 feet to the right. It’s so intense. It’s so intense that you could take a nap on the field with everything out there. Of course, I’m being sarcastic. The only time it’s actually fun is when you’re annihilating the other team while they’re asleep on the field.…

The most painful part of an ACL tear is not the ligament itself, but the heartbreak that accompanies it. My freshman year of high school, I was homecoming princess, a member of the student council, a volunteer for the special olympics, and the 4a Basketball leading scorer in the state. With great friends and a 4.0, I was the epitome of a successful high school athlete. My world came crumbling down when I tore my every ligament in my right knee, weeks before the state tournament.…

One situation where I found myself in a fixed mindset was when I was a freshman at Mountain Pointe high school trying to make the baseball team. At the time, I had a half-hearted passion for baseball that made me want to be on the school baseball team, but I felt that everything would come natural to me because I was Dominican. I was quite proud of how Dominicans were typically great at baseball quite naturally it seemed. However, with this knowledge I became highly critical about everything I did when playing baseball at the high school camps before the baseball tryouts. I did not focus on overall improvement as I tried to ensure that every throw, batting, and pitch was perfect.…

My first baseball game ever had been off to a tremendous start; until my next at bat. After my first at bat, I was riding my high horse thinking I was going to get another hit and make my dad proud all over again. I stepped into the white caulk batter’s box, and went through it all again. As the pitch came in, I noticed it seemed to be coming towards me instead of down the middle. I wasn’t sure what to do, so I stayed right where I was; and got…

Baseball is a sport that many consider to be “America’s pastime.” It has been something that has been passed down for generations in families, along with being played across the world. According to Hanson and Ravizza (2007), the players within this specific sport have claimed that they feel the level of performance shown by them is consisting of mental and emotional elements. Since baseball is commonly started at a young age and transformed from the area of deliberate play into practice throughout the development stage of a child, it leaves many opportunities for a person to develop issues that need to be worked upon when they make it to the professional level. The people who surround the athlete throughout their playing career play an influential part in their life, and could determine how they deal with issues as they arise (Makhni, Buza, Byram, & Ahmad, 2014).…

Before I became the good baseball player I am today there were some struggles I had to go through. Back when I was about 10 years old I was an ok player because I sucked I thought I would never be good enough to impress my dad and showed him I didn’t suck. That didn’t matter how good I did if I messed up one little thing he will just tell me I suck and it wouldn’t matter if it was big or small the mistake was he would tell me I suck and not congratulate me on the things I did right. During when all of this was happening I was thinking im my head how I can improve to not make my dad mad. During the Christmas season, I was invited by the Texas Accolade Sports Academy to congratulate the senior players throughout the state on graduating high school, and for living up to their dreams of playing in a prestigious college. The auditorium was filled with students from different cities, all joyful and anxious to receive their medals of honor for their achievements. I was assigned to give a motivating speech on aspirations to the swarm of individuals seated around me, but I didn’t quite understand what that meant until I stood on top of that podium. The warm smiles on the parents’ faces, cheerful for the success of their children, was when I finally realized the true meaning of love not only in sports, but in life. I walked throughout the seating area prior to the event with the intention…
