I was reaching my full potential at the age of 16 and started to fulfill the requirements of the university coaches on the other side of the border. Phone calls and emails about tours, visits, and practicing with the team started to occupy my life as a baseball player. Finally, the long desired success at the sport I dedicated a large portion of my life to, was within reach. I can recall the day I made, what seemed to me at the time, a major mistake. A mistake that changed the path of my life within minutes. The stands were filled with scouts with clipboards, stopwatches, and their eyes scouring the field for new talent. Picking new players out by one by one, off a list of names. As an athlete, you only get one chance to impress your future coaches. A realization came to mind, with a question that needed an answer, “why are you here playing? Is this really what you want?”. A question that rebounded throughout my mind, demanding an answer. As stated by Lewis Thomas, “the hope is in the faculty of wrongness” (Thomas 2) which in its entirety, made sense to me at this point in time. I didn’t want to play baseball anymore, or give the majority of my time to it. The passion that once lit the desire to become great was not there anymore. It was time to move onto other aspects of my life such as academics, volunteering, and working. Something that seems so simple and normal to many people, I never had the chance to so such things to create a normalcy in my life. There was hope outside of baseball and I’m pleased to be where I am today. A mistake on the field lead me to life I actually did
