Personal Narrative: My Life After Surgery

Decent Essays
One of the most defining moments of my life, that shaped me as a person, was when I was injured. I injured myself in the first softball game of our season. I hurt my shoulder in warmup, but continued to on it the whole game. By the end of the game, I was not able to move my arm. At this point in my life my parents had recently gotten a divorce, they did not talk and could not agree on anything. They left the decision to get get surgery or not, on me. That day I decided I would rather train for life rather than, a few fun times in life. I knew I could do so much with my future if I was healed. I wanted a chance to live life to the fullest. One year after surgery, I still agree that it was the best decision for me. I learned a lot from the process.

When my mom came to the realization that, basketball is not what I want to do, and that I now identify as a dancer, so did the rest of the world/family. My mom constantly showed the video of the team's performance, which ended up getting over 2,000 views on Youtube! This clash, helped me become the person I am today, because it helped me figure out who I was, and not what everyone thought I was going to be. I was able to prove that I can figure that out by myself, and that I didn’t need a pre-chosen career or destiny. This might not be what I want to do my whole life, but it’s a sign that I’ll be able to figure out what I want to do on…

Before I went to the hospital my family and friends tried really hard to keep me calm before this big endeavor that would change my life forever. One of the things they did was talk to my pastor at my church about blessing me before the surgery. My priest blessed me by saying in a holy voice, “Please God protect Emily from all harm during this surgery, and please be with her during this hard experience.” Another wonderful gesture my family did for me was put on a birthday party, since my birthday was only a couple days after my surgery when I would be still recovering. After the celebration came to a close I went upstairs to go to bed, but before I fell asleep my mother came into the room with a gloomy look on her face.…

They call them “Tap-taps,” the brightly painted open back trucks that transport passengers through the dusty streets of Haiti. A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue.
