During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. From growing up in a military family, I have become very resilient and I adapt really well to change. With my surroundings changing all the time, I have to be able to quickly adapt to my new setting and find ways to fit in as quickly as possible. I have been to about twelve different schools so far, and I have lived in about eight different houses. I now appreciate more fully the 8 years of service my brother gave to the Army National Guard and the 20 years my father gave as an active duty officer in the Army. I formed strong, new connections with them as I marched across the parade deck on Parris Island, in my blues at the head of my platoon. After five months of school and two years of on-the-job training, I finally felt strong in my MOS as an air traffic controller. I have experienced many stressful situations recently my organization, however none have compared to stress I experiences leading up to my deployment to Iraq. When I joined the Oregon National Guard, I was told to never go to the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (41 IBCT), made up of two Infantry Battalions, a Calvary Battalion, a Field Artillery Battalion, Support Battalion and the Headquarters. I was also told that I should especially never want to work in 2nd Battalion of the 162nd Infantry (2-162 IN BN), which was the strongest of the two Infantry elements in the brigade. After working in the state Joint Force Headquarters for eight years, because no other person in my career field would take the position, I was asked to take one for the team, and join 2-162 IN BN, as their Senior Human Resources Noncommissioned Officer. Two years leading up to the deployment I was continually tested, and these experience have ultimately made me a stronger leader.…
Every morning I am up early, before anyone else in my household. Even before my husband, William, I let him sleep, he will wake up when he needs to. The person I am today is someone that has had a great deal of life experience in the short amount of time that I’ve been here. I enlisted into the Marine Corps at the age of 17 and turned 18 the day I arrived to boot camp. I quickly had to learn what it meant to be responsible for those around me to include their welfare, their lives, and their families. I also developed strong leadership and management skills to accompany those skills in which are needed to be a successful Career Marine. I was meritoriously promoted twice to the ranks of Corporal (E-4) and Sergeant (E-5) for demonstrating those skills in an exemplary way.…
