Personal Narrative: My Learning To Read

Improved Essays
One specific time I remember learning to read was when I was maybe 6 or 7 and I was have trouble pronouncing the word “this.” I don’t remember what the title of the book was or what it was about but it was a short children’s book that had a couple sentences on each page. My dad was sitting with me at our kitchen table listening as I read the book. When I stumbled on the word “this” he told me to sound it out but when I couldn’t figure it out he told me how to say it. For some reason I couldn’t remember how to say the word throughout the whole book and my dad was so frustrated. When I finished it the first time I was disappointed that I couldn’t read the whole thing by myself. I was determined to accomplish the goal so I read the book a second

As a child, I would often struggle with reading assignments and I would lose focus on the subject. When I reminisce about those days, I recall those teachers like mechanics who did not fix the problems but sent the bill anyway. With that said, we can only focus today on where we want to go and not where we have…

My first memory of reading was when I was little, about 4 or 5, and my mom would read to me when I was going to bed. By far my favorite book that she would read to me was “Where The Wild Things Are”. I loved the way the booked looked with the faded looking colors that made it look old and I loved the pictures of the wild things and how the kid was the king and everyone listened to him and I just loved it.…

Before I started learning English I had a mysterious attraction to different types of genres when it came down to books. I was born in Worcester, Massachusetts one of the coldest state ever in the winter. As I turned one my grandmother got very sick and she needed help so we ended up moving down to one of the most beautiful, tropical, friendliest island ever, Puerto Rico.…

The first thing I would like to state is that remembering where I wrote my reading logs was the hardest thing to do. As I was looking at my reading log I would see how uneven the numbers would very. Like one week I would read around 57 pages but the next only 33. So as I looked back in my books, I realized that when I get bored with the book I tend to just skim read. But when I read a part I really like I will read it over three times to soak up the information.…

When I was first growing up reading was my toughest obstacle. I remember one of the most embarrassing bits of news I had ever received was that I was two years behind my reading level. I was in third grade and was told that I was currently on a first grader's level of reading. One of the ways I overcame this challenge was by standing in the pantry and reading every cereal box, soup can, and wrapper I could find. Imagine holding a soup can in your small hand and trying to understand your mom telling you that it is 'Cambell's soup' not 'Camp Bell's soup'.…

I am most proud of my reading responses for each of the module because I have learned so much by reading those chapters. Not only it helped me improve my reading skills, it also improved my writing and thinking skills. I was able to apply what I have learned in the chapters to the reading responses. I have always struggled to put my thoughts on paper in a way that is coherent and correct according to the assignments. For example, the reading responds in chapter one for the Coca-Cola bumper sticker, I took a different approach which made the respond off topic.…

The city of Reading has a population of 87,893 people, and is the fifth largest city in the state of Pennsylvania. Over forty percent of the population in Reading lives below the poverty line. Growing up in Reading, I have seen a lot of things a child in a rural or suburban setting might not, things most kids do not need to see while growing up. Students as young as seventh grade are more worried about joining a gang than they are getting good grades. Girls at the age of fourteen walk around school with a child growing inside of them.…

I started talking around 3 years old which stunted my reading ability just a little bit. My reading did not have a strong start in the beginning to the point I had to really work hard on improving my reading ability. I do remember when I was in elementary school my teacher would read slowly word by word and show pictures. Unfortunately that made me dependant on being read to by the teacher rather than taking the time to read a book myself when I was a child. I was not interested in the beginning, and am not really my biggest interest at this time either.…
