Personal Narrative: My Learning Experience At The Pavilion

I have had numerous learning experiences while my time at the Pavilion however if I had to chose a specific learning experience I would have to say this was when I realize that I had made a difference for an individual. While doing case management I was told to go get a signature for a client that was going to be discharge. I went into the unit for the client’s signature and realized he was upset. I was told not to talk to him and just to get a signature however my social worker nature kicked in and I asked what was wrong. After talking to him I learned he has substance abuse issues and was homeless he really wanted to get help and had ask the discharge planner for help and she ignored him. He mentioned he asked another therapist on the unit who also dismissed him. I told him I was just a student but immediately took action and consulted my supervisor wither help me provided him with half way houses that served as treatment facilities for his addiction. He approached me upon discharged and thanked me for caring and just listening to him. This was significant to me because after completing so many hours at the Pavilion and seeing such a high turnover rate with the clients I finally felt like I had made a difference in someone’s life this is my most gratifying moment in my placement. …show more content…

It has brought together everything I have learned in the MSW program and filed placement. It feels extremely amazing to have accomplished so much and learned so many things all while meeting exceptional human beings. I think I learned that many times we won’t be able to tell if a person is dealing with something traumatic in their life by the way they look and act. This experience also taught me that sometimes in the social work field you have to think quickly and efficiently. While we didn’t have much planning time to prepare for the event, I personally thought it went well considering the time constraint. I think this is an important skill for social workers to have because many times we will have clients and agencies test our ability to think and prepare quickly. Lastly I also learned that when young adults or children are exposed to college or even the idea of a higher education it really gives them the chance to consider…

The skill that I first learned was on the very first day going to Norview, the class and I were taught how to feed the residents properly due to their individual medical status. Later on that day we practiced how to properly feed someone, it was a little weird, but funny because we were feeding each other. The very last part we did before we left to go back to school was my class…

I remember the day before my first day at Pennoyer. I was sad and happy, scared, and mad all at the same time. I remember crying and yelling at my parents to not make me go to school that next day. The next day I showed up at school and remember walking into Mrs. Michael’s third grade class and seeing all of these new people that I would be friends with for years to come. At this school is where I made new friends, great memories, and where I grew up from a little kid into a young adult.…

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

Since starting high school, my interest in classroom learning had dropped quite significantly. I felt like grades were just a game, and that I should be out in the world learning things I deemed "practical life skills." My senior year I was able to mentor in a classroom of fourth graders for one period, ever other day. I took the class thinking it would be an easy and fun way to spend an hour an a half.…

The Broad My museum trip can be summed up with the word serendipitous. When I arrived at the Broad Museum in Downtown Los Angeles, I saw the line to enter the museum go down two blocks. I walked into the lobby, intending to ask a museum attendant on the estimated wait time in line. After hearing the line was going to be a three hour wait, we continued our conversation and started bonding over Yayoi Kusama’s work, especially her Infinity Mirrored Room.…

A few days before my senior night attending Cimarron-Memorial an event was held for all senior graduates on campus. Family and friends were invited to an event to gather around and converse about special events coming up and discussions with students about their accomplishments. A microphone was passed around and we were scared to say a few words, if any that we wanted to share. I had no intentions of saying anything, as I usually tend to opt out of any self- acknowledging or appraisal in front of large groups as thee is always a chance of giving a wrongful self-absorbed impression, which I find not becoming of a working professional.…
