Personal Narrative: My Leadership

Can you believe that we are only two weeks away from school being over? This quarter went by incredibly fast. It has amazed me how much I have learned from my leadership classes. In the beginning of the quarter I wrote about my highest and lowest capacities from the Emotionally Intelligent Inventory. First, I want write about how I improved my lowest capacity, Emotional Self-Perception and how I used my leadership skills from the course to be a better leader. Then, I will give you examples of how I used my highest capacities, Authenticity and Achievement to my advantage in some of my toughest times this quarter. Lastly, I will explain how I plan on using my capacities to better my leadership in the future. As you know my lowest capacities …show more content…
This has never been something that I really struggled with. This quarter I loved how I was able to interconnect this leadership class with leadership 495. I feel like I was able to show who I really am to the classes. Just last week we learned about the Five Approaches to Managing Conflict. They are Competing, Collaborating, Compromising, Avoiding, and Accommodating. I had no idea how often I try to avoid conflict. I feel like this is something that contradicts my authenticity because I noticed that I do “postpone” addressing certain issues if I feel uneasy about them. Just recently I was able to overcome the approach of avoiding conflict and it felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulder. I think that this is something that I plan on using for the future because it not only addresses the issues, but it makes me feel better as well. I think that I can use my idea of writing down how I feel and why as a way to increase my skills for Emotional Self-Perception. Being in tune with my emotions will make me a better leader and a better person. Since I see myself being a youth advocate in the future I think that taking all of these lessons and applying them to my everyday life will only be beneficial for me and those around

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

Dedicating my time to teaching children, such as through babysitting and church activities, has taught me the benefit and strategy of successful leadership. I learned to have the courage to tackle conflicts head on while having empathy for the other person’s feelings, sometimes body language signals can be different than the person’s true emotions, also learning to control my emotions and take constructive criticism without shutting down. I 'm very thankful for learning such useful skills because I 'm heading into the demanding world of business. I didn’t notice how much I avoided conflicts, and my inability to communicate fully until the day we constructed the conflict philosophy workshop. The workshop determined that I was a little bit of everything but mostly a compromiser and avoider. While in class I even got to the root of where my weaknesses began to form, and began to search for strength in those areas.…

Through this process we focused on what we wanted to represent as a team working together in the best interest of our students. In the end we developed a vision that is now a foundation for our success, because everyone will benefit from our accomplishments. If we are able to effectively collaborate, which is important to our vision, then we will be able to create challenging lessons for our students and make certain that we are meeting the need of all students and inspiring them for future experiences. During the vision creating process, I also gained some perspective of things I need to develop for my future as a leader. Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…

Introduction “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” — Vince Lombardi As I reflect on my leadership journey, I become more convinced with Vince that leaders are not born leaders, but are a result of a conscious effort to be one. While serving in various institutions in leadership positions, I have seen myself emerge to those positions through my hard work and skills rather than just having been assigned to it. Various factors like experience, training, mentorship, conscious practice and even failure have contributed in developing my leadership abilities.…
