My Late Live Aging

Describe the impact on you physically, emotionally, socially, and
Financially (as much as you can imagine the impact).

Living with a chronic condition such as arthritis in late life would feel as if I am held captive within the walls of a prison cell with no way out. My condition will be a constant reminder of not being able to physically experience life’s voyage because it is now a struggle to accomplish even the simplest task, such as tying my shoe lace or walk up a flight of stairs. If arthritis is my condition, I could only imagine the aches and pains invading my joints and body experiencing limitations making it hard to maintain normalcy and independence. The frustrations of having to depend on others and the guilt for having to do so will bring sorrow. I do not believe I would become suicidal as older adults experiencing chronic conditions are more susceptible of experiencing negative feeling affecting their mental well-being and are at greater risk of mortality (Shtompel, Whiteman, & Ruggiano, 2014). Furthermore, socially, my condition will make me feel isolated at times based on the severity of pain, discomfort, medication, or medical advice given by the physician which will cause a decline in events with family and friends. I am hopeful with proper management isolation will be minimal. Social ties with family may stay intact but will be at risk as we have read family members normally become care givers which can become both stressful and burdensome (Greene, 2007). Additionally, because social support is necessary I will make an attempt to stay connected as much as my condition will allow. As a final point, because I am an active church member, social ties to the church will not be broken as spirituality with be a continued coping mechanism, however the level of frequency is questionable. For example, attendance will be based on my physical functionality and mobilization. Some chronic conditions may require social workers to assist in providing community based services such as senior centers, acute care services such as in patient residential services, in home services such as respite care, or long term care such as hospice. For example, with a life threatening diagnosis such as cancer, hospice services might be needed. A social worker may also assist in providing long-term care in addition to seeking out a positive support system incorporating family and community. Helping the client to set realistic short term goals he or she may enjoy should be considered. On the other hand, arthritis may require a social worker to assist in providing in home service with making certain the home is accidental free, and home health services. Clinical social workers employed within hospitals are able to assist those with chronic conditions with counseling, therapy, and much more.
