Personal Narrative: My Last Name Renee

Decent Essays
Renee,
Thank you for sharing the reality of the struggle that came with having the last name Geoffrey. That must have been very frustrating for you and your brother. I had no idea that Renee meant reborn or transformed. I find it very interesting since my wife’s middle name is Renee. I am sure she knows the meaning but I will have to share with her that I learned something new about the name Renee. It’s difficult for a Californian to grasp the idea of individuals squirming over a last name, although I can see how your married name can be used to see how accepting people are. Cross culture and interracial relationships are really common in California.

My name, Jenna Lee Wood, is a traditional Southern double name that comes from my mother's side of the family. After a brief interview with my mom, I learned that my first name comes from the 1980's soap opera, "Dallas". My parents loved the name Jenna from the start and knew that if I was a girl, I would definitely be named Jenna. The real struggle came with the middle name, because I was the first girl of my generation of the Wood's; everyone felt that I absolutely had to be named after the Wood side considering it was an abomination that my first name did not automatically come from said side. The only 21st century name was Katherine, so my name would have been Jenna Katherine-…

When my birth father’s grandparents crossed Ellis Island from Lebanon, their accents were heavy and they were not very well understood (Pardee, Misty Bussell). Therefore, what was said as David was interpreted as Davis. My forever last name Pardee (Par-dee) has a meaning of certainty and truth (Family History). Having a last name that means certainty and truth has more meaning to me than I think anyone will ever understand. “Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…
