The Syrian farmers’ lands have dried up, climate change and over-damming along the Tigris, along with the Euphrates has forced them to migrate towards the urban center in search of government assistance. Arriving, exhausted and subdued nevertheless, seeking sanctuary, finding only a failing government, along with the burning wheel of revolt. I met that farmer and in my elaborate effort to find a theory that befits his struggle, to provide some type of guidance or comfort to offer him, sadly all i had left to give was a penny with a hole in it. As I volunteered amidst the refugees in za'atari camp ( the largest Syrian refugee camp at approximately 80,000 and now considered to be the fourth largest city in Jordan) and Jerash camp (Palestinian refugee camp resulting from the 1948 exile) the changes done were sentimental and heartfelt but not concrete. Cornell Law would be instrumental in my training towards obtaining my Juris Doctorate. A program such as Clark Initiative for Law and Development in the Middle East and North Africa, would train me to understand the politics and laws of the Levant, enabling me to focus in on issues where I may be instrumental. As a volunteer I realized that being relatable and passionate alone does not make me an agent of change, for I do not have in my arsenal the proper tools and training that I seek. Being fluent in Arabic and English does not qualify me, being a descendant of an exiled people does not qualify me, witnessing abuse and terror does not qualify me. It is my intense passion for those who have been uprooted and forced into exile, it is my foreign soil seeking its native soil. Law will bring me home, and if I could choose my house, home would be

The generation I am growing up in, is full of a lot of issues but what bothers me the most is the fact that we are never told the full truth. I’m grow up where it’s wrong for an officer to do his job, or defend him or herself so they can see their family at the end of the day. The news broadcasters almost never give us the 100% full truth. This makes me mad, because to get an innocent child involved in your criminal activities is a shame. “Boys will be boys” my mom said nonchalantly as I told her what had occurred in my last class period of the day. It baffled me how a teenage boy being mocked for his sexuality could be so trivial in her eyes. I didn’t understand how the struggle for gay rights was any different from black rights or feminism. To me we were all united, brought together by our interminable fight for equality and acceptance. As an amiable and peaceful introvert I find it difficult to stand up for what I believe is right.…

Monday, August 22nd, 2016, approximately 10 o’clock PM. I arrived home after a typical summer night out with my friends at the local Applebee’s, however I was greeted at the door by my already enraged father. Before I had time to take my shoes off of my feet, my father was already ridiculing me, spouting phrases such as “you’re so irresponsible” and “you cannot be trusted with anything.” Now of course there was some foul language included sporadically in those remarks, but overall I was shocked at why I was being attacked seemingly unprovoked. My father then decided to inform me that tomorrow at 8 AM I had to report to the soccer fields at Holy Ghost Preparatory School for soccer tryouts.…

It was like any other school day, coming back from lunch, sitting in class, and talking to friends; however, it all changed once I arrived in my American Studies class. Mrs. Forbs was standing in front of the class waiting for everyone to quiet down. The class was a bunch of sixth graders, so it took a while to make us be silent. The day felt weird for me, I had my same robotic schedule but for some reason something didn’t feel right. I thought it had something to do with the food I ate for lunch, I would be prepared to head down to the bathroom or even nurse if that was the case; however, what happened that day no sixth grader would be able to prepare for.…

Growing up the only girl in a house with a traditional mother made my grandmother submissive. She lived in a home with her mother and grandmother and “it was up to [her] to put the food on the table.” Since both of her parents were working, and boys during the 60s did not do household chores according to my great grandmother, my grandma was expecting to cook and clean the kitchen when she got home from school. She needed to do her part to help around the house because there were a lot of men living under one roof. My grandma looks back on it now and said it was very annoying that her brothers never had to do anything and she always had to clean up after them.…
