Personal Narrative: My Junior Varsity Tennis Team

Decent Essays
My freshman year, I decided to try out for my high school’s junior varsity tennis team. The tryouts went smoothly, and I joined the team. I did well at practice, but during our first match, I let the mental pressure get to me, and I choked. I was moved to a low position on the roster and did not qualify to play in many of the matches, which was very frustrating. At the end of the season, my coach told me that I was not good enough to be on the team the following year. Initially, I felt defeated, and wondered if I should quit and focus my efforts on other interests. I enjoyed playing tennis, loved the camaraderie of the team, and wanted to prove to myself that I was worthy of playing for my school. Taking my defeat as a challenge, I decided

Tires crunched on the loose gravel parking lot as I was dropped off at my high school’s tennis courts on the first day of school. With my high school requiring a year of physical education, I opted to take the lifetime sport for I was nervous to compete for a spot on the highly competitive teams my school was known for. I was met at the court by 30 other freshmen with a mixed variety of expertise spanning from the first time to ever hold a racquet to a district ranked player. The district ranked player’s father, Mr. Weaver, was a sophomore chemistry teacher who happened to play tennis professionally in his heyday. Mr. Weaver volunteered to teach the freshman tennis team and to train them the basics before they were transferred to “the real…

One situation where I found myself in a fixed mindset was when I was a freshman at Mountain Pointe high school trying to make the baseball team. At the time, I had a half-hearted passion for baseball that made me want to be on the school baseball team, but I felt that everything would come natural to me because I was Dominican. I was quite proud of how Dominicans were typically great at baseball quite naturally it seemed. However, with this knowledge I became highly critical about everything I did when playing baseball at the high school camps before the baseball tryouts. I did not focus on overall improvement as I tried to ensure that every throw, batting, and pitch was perfect.…

I was standing by myself on the bright green tennis court, gripping my racket. Groups of other tennis players were leaning against the chain link fence, waiting, like me, for tryouts to begin. After what felt like forever, but in reality was only minutes a friend of mine and returning player walked over to me. Having not seen each other in a month or so we both greeted each other enthusiastically.…
