Personal Narrative: My Jump Shot

Improved Essays
It was a month before tryouts, on a windy Sunday afternoon. I was in my neighbor's backyard, which has a basketball hoop. In 7th grade I didn’t have the best year for basketball even though I made A team. This year I had to make sure this was different. I was practicing as I had been for the previous couple weeks, working on my jump shot, my contested layups, and free throws. I had a strict schedule where I would practice for at least 2 hours a day.

I knew there was a good chance I would make the team, but the previous year I didn’t score at all, my jump shot was not great and I couldn’t make a layup to save my life. I knew I really needed to practice if I wanted to make the team. Twice a week me and my dad would go to the local YMCA. We would scrimmage a lot and it got me a lot better. He taught me some really good moves to use in games.

I hadn’t ran in a while outside of football. I would run around a park that is close to my house as much as my body could take. It was nearly time for tryouts and I felt I was ready. On the 1st day of tryouts I did not do that great. I missed a lot of threes and I knew the second and final day I had to do good. The day had passed and I made sure I got a lot of sleep. I walked into the gym and played as hard as I could all though I didn’t really score I tried to get as many rebounds, blocks, and assists as I

I had expected there to be an empty court but instead, I would play with a team from a local school. At first, I thought that I would do terrible, but to my surprise, my hard work with the ball paid off. My dribbling skills had gotten much better, and during the two weeks that I practiced with the team, I improved my shot. When we got back home to Atlanta, I continued to practice and for the first time, I beat my friend at on-on-one on Labor Day weekend. Now, I still have one goal remaining.…

When I tried out for the basketball team during the winter of my freshman year, I hadn't even considered the possibility of not making the team. Before that year, I had played on travel and middle school teams. I knew that I wasn't the best player on the court, but I scored a few points a game, and I played decent defence. For the duration of the tryout practices, I thought that I was doing well, but apparently the coach did not consider me a good fit for the team. After a meeting with the coach on the last day of tryouts, I was forced to go home with a heavy heart and a tight stomach.…

Being almost six feet tall, playing a sport – basketball or volleyball – was almost expected of me. My parents put me in many sports as a child but three, which I played throughout my entire life, were soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. As a kid, I was always good at basketball because of my height and as I grew up, it became an advantage. So, being told in eleventh grade that I wasn’t good enough to make the team was devastating. “Your work ethic isn’t there,” Coach told me, “You’re athletic, but you don’t want it.”…

Og Mandino once said, “Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.” I strongly agree with this quote as I have had experiences in which this quote proved itself. I once tried out for a football team and nearly didn’t make it, but my determination to succeed was strong enough to earn myself a spot on a new football team. I have played football since I was five, but I never faced the challenge of trying out for a team. Going into tryouts, I felt intimidated by the older kids trying out, but I didn’t allow that to break my focus on giving my all.…

It all hurt, but I could never forgive what they said about me. My other coach from middle school, had decided to put me into the game. I was so excited my adrenaline was rushing. Every day at practice I had been working on my jump shots outside the paint, but close to the three pointer. The one thing my coach had said to me before I walked onto the court was, “If you take the shot, you’re benched the entire game.”…

We had shooting drills, fast break drills, then the five on five basketball game. So whenever I was playing, I just kept thinking what coach told me to do. I was shooting the ball amazingly, making exceptional passes, even playing marvelous defense. After tryouts were over there would be a list for the next day in the coach's office. I was truly nervous to go to school to check, but my friend sent me a picture and my name was on the list.…
