Personal Narrative: My Journey To The Science Olympiad

Improved Essays
There is a quote by Les Brown that I think is really inspiring. She said, “Life takes on meaning when you become motivated, set goals, and charge after them in an unstoppable manner.” This quote helps me to keep moving towards my goals and not give up once it starts getting difficult. There are so many things that I want to do this year, like getting into Science Olympiad, getting A’s in all of my classes, and getting a good chair in my orchestras outside of school. I hope that I can stay motivated in order to achieve these things.
One of my goals is to get onto the Science Olympiad team. Last year, I was on the middle school team, and on the day of one of the competitions, I missed the bus. This meant that I had to go to the high school and take the bus with them. When I was there, I could tell that everyone was friends with each other, and the teacher was really nice and

I’m in two orchestras called Philadelphia Sinfonia Players and Philadelphia Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra, and I want to get a good chair in both of them. The seating arrangements in these orchestras are different than some other orchestras; they put the two best players of the section in the front and evenly spread out the good and not as good players so that the orchestra sounds resonant and full everywhere. I would like to be in the front or at least near the front. In order to do that, I have to practice my solo piece a lot so it’ll sound good during the seating audition. The people in the front also have to lead their section, which means that I will have to practice my orchestra music a lot if I want to be first chair. Last year, I was in Philadelphia Sinfonia Players, and they made me first chair of the second violin section, but I wasn’t very good at leading. The conductor told me many times that I had to play louder, and he gave me advice on how to get better at leading a section, so I hope I get to make use of that advice this

Marching Band Officer Essay I am interested in becoming a Drill Tech Captain or Brass Captain for the 2018-2019 Marching Band season. Ever since I started marching with the Mahwah Marching Thunderbirds, I have found myself amazed and interested in the culmination of expression through music and movement. Never before have I participated in an activity with such structure, passion, pride, and strong relationships between members. As a freshman, I was inspired by professional leaders of the band and how they were not only dignified while on the field, but enthusiastic and welcoming as well. I would love to be a leader in Marching Band so that I may positively contribute to the transference of the marching band drill and music from paper…

Although you have to be 36 years old to legally become the president of the United States, I feel as if I’ve experienced an aspect of presidency in my fourteenth year of living. Of course, it is obvious that being president of my middle school’s National Junior Honor Society is nowhere near being the president of the United States. But in fact, my experience depicts a quite harrowing and concerning aspect of presidency. In an interwoven city and school, creating close relationships was inevitable.…

Successful organizations all require 2 things: a strong team and strong leaders to direct the team to victory, and the Marching Pioneers is no exception to this rule. With an ensemble as large as the Marching Pioneers, there is no physically possible way 4 top tier leaders can give everyone the attention they need. Section leaders are necessary for the success of our fine organization, and there’s nothing more satisfying than being part of a leadership team that can add to the already growing success of this talented group. Here are just a few reasons why I would like to be in the next generation of saxophone section leaders. To be a section leader is like being given a lump of clay and being told to mold into the Statue of David.…

I now had the title of section leader in the band, and was also an upperclassmen of the football team. It wasn’t exactly as easy as it seemed from those of the past. The sophomores thought they knew everything just because they had been there one year before, and the freshman thought they were hot shit for making it through middle school. It was painful to witness the underclassmen of football only squat halfway down, or the underclassmen of band march out of time, and have your advice go in one ear and right out the other. I decided that I needed some type of legitimacy as a leader.…

Over 15 years ago, Robert Nash (2011) developed a new academic writing style called Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN). For the first time in academics the unacceptable use of the ‘subjective I [me]’was acceptable in scholarly writing. Before SPN only the ‘objective they [we]’ was appropriate for research because scholars believed that only experts could support an agreeable or disagreeable topic. Nash (2011) wanted SPN to become, “a respectable research genre in higher education, particularly in the professional schools” (p. 4), so he wrote his first book, Liberating Scholarly Writing: The Power of Personal Narrative (2004).…

Semester of Learning Experiences People most always say, “ Learn from you mistakes and achievements.” I would definitely conclude that is exactly what I’ve done this first semester of college. There are many times that I wanted to simply curl into a ball because of all the newness and unfamiliarity. At times I found myself doing just that, but realizing that I needed to toughen up burst from my comfort zone. I can say sleeping through your classes never the best choice, not going just because you find it too easy, missing a class just to write a paper for another class, and differentiating between minimal and highly important status of choices.…

A significant opportunity in my life that has had a major impact on me is an organization called Kids Are Scientists Too. KAST is a student-run non-profit corporation that aims to inspire young scholars to be interested in science and learning through fun, interactive science experiments led by passionate teachers. I was one of those passionate teachers. When I first heard of KAST, I immediately knew that I could contribute to the organization. I applied to become the lead at an elementary school, and after I was deemed fit for the role, I was chosen as the lead of a local elementary school.…

My parents have said to work hard and do my best in school. I never understood why until I got older. The reason they told me to do my best in school was because they wanted me to think about school and my future. Both of my parents didn't get the chance to go to college. They both came to the United States looking for what most people come to the United States for ‘The American Dream’, they wanted a place where they could raise their children and find a stable job.…

It was a pleasant spring morning at Challenger School. A calm breeze blew, and the sun shone brightly upon the Earth. Students ran out of the classrooms at top speed as soon as the bell for recess had rung, but I sighed heavily as I walked towards the playground with a heavy heart, my mind deep in though, my body heaving. I was in shock at the recent turn of events, and I was so angry that I felt like leaving my school forever. My friends and I would, at this time, have been playing tag in the playground, but now I not only had no hope for this, I had no idea of what else to do during my recess for the rest of the year.…

Also, I also cannot stress enough how important it is to take risks. Please take risks while you still have years ahead for you in high school, not peer pressured ones, but the risks that improve yourself as a person. These experiences will be part of you and will help shape your personality since those risks you take never leave you. A risk I took was joining my school’s junior trivia team. Being a grade nine student who was the only one not in an advanced placement class, of course I was the weakest member, however despite that, the experience was worthwhile because I made a friend…
