Personal Narrative: My Journey To The Presidential Management Fellowship

Improved Essays
My journey, the key experiences and decisions, has lead me to the Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) because I seek to utilize my education, experience, and skills in the service of the American public. I recognize that committing to the public interest means challenging work, following through with the goals I set for myself, and promoting top-tier excellence through organizational leadership and team work. These attributes shaped my ethics and routine. Similarly the professionals who have had the pleasure of serving their country through the Presidential Management Fellowship have shared such qualities, and it is my intention to illustrate how my experiences at American University have contributed to my development to this point. I have participated in NYC’s Ladders for Leaders program for the past two years and I have not once regret participating. In those shorts 2 months each year, I had gained an extraordinary amount of experience that I can take into the workplace. For example, my internship at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office last summer taught me to effectively work together to be able to efficiently finish our tasks. If I were to be on my own and worked independently, it would take me a drastically longer time and would never been able to meet my great co-workers. I would like to join Ladders for Leaders once again to gain even more experience in order to be more prepared for the workplace.…

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

My leadership crucible did not take place in my military leadership tenure but as senior in college at North Georgia College and State University. The experience of serving as a fraternity president during a time of probation helped shape me into the organizational leader I am today. My fraternity experienced an unfortunate alcohol related event leading it to serve a one-year probation period. At the same time, my peers elected me as President of the fraternity to lead it during this time of adversity and eventually off probation. The presidency presented numerous challenges including morale issues, sharing a common focus, making difficult decisions and working with executives on the school advisory board.…
