Personal Narrative: My Journey To The Kansas River

Decent Essays
We just left Independence and we’re already having problems. The back right wheel kept falling apart because the extremely bumpy trail kept taking the wheel off. That took about 3 to 4 hours total just to put the darn thing back on. It's been about 3 days and we just got to the Kansas River. Throughout those days were a lot of complaining and missing home. When we got to the river, I bought a raft for myself and and Juan because he needed the help. After we crossed the Kansas River, our train started having more problems. Sam didn’t feed his oxen right so they were walking slower than they already are. It was really stressful because George kept getting blisters on his feet and he sat on one of the cows as it trotted next to us. He kept on

Later that night the tide rose and the waves were getting bigger and the men were rowing as hard as they possibly could, the water was cold and some of the men died that night from hypothermia and hunger. The next day the waters calmed and the Brigade along with Pierre arrived at Grand Portage, without a doubt Pierre knew he was going to make it. When they boarded the Port, they went to the market and traded all day with the merchants, and when they had everything they needed to get back it was already night, so they decided to stay the night and set up camp. Finally, Pierre and the rest of the brigade had a feast and with all the sores in Pierre’s body he was surprised to see that the men in the brigade had enough energy to fight and hike a 20-mile mountain if they wanted to. When it was time to eat, Pierre thought of how much his father would be proud of him for doing such a treacherous…

In 2011 my family and I took a trip out West in an RV. My family consists of my parents, older brother Patrick ( now a sophomore at Madison), younger brother Declan ( now a sophomore at MUHS), and my younger sister Nora ( now in 8th grade). We were all there for this trip just younger. On our trip one of the main attractions we stopped at for a few days was at the Grand Teton National Park in Jackson Hole Wyoming. As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…

I was conceived at the bottom of Grand Canyon. At four months old I was on my first river trip. The Colorado River banks were my first playground, and as someone who wants to preserve the wild landscape that I call home, I am looking to the future to figure out what I can do to ensure its protection as environmental changes continue to occur. The rivers of the west are my sanctuary, whether it be the Green, the San Juan, or the mighty Colorado, every river trip I have ever been on has been one of the happiest times of my life. Experiencing the outdoors at a young age that has shaped me to become the person I am today.…

Ever since my first backpacking trip 6 years ago, I’ve had an affinity for the Appalachian Trail. I’m constantly looking for excuses to mash our lives into the giant, 50 liter bags, and hit the trail for a few days. This past year, in early fall, I convinced my parents to don their sturdy boots and disappear into the wilds of bear state park with me for three days. We were dropped off at the top of Bear Mountain and, while my parents argued over directions, I wandered around the windswept ridge.…

In January of last year I went on a trip to Colorado on a "college visit" with a friend and my father to University of Colorado Boulder. We left Wednesday night, skipping school both Thursday and Friday. We did go to the college and took a tour of the campus on Thursday which I greatly enjoyed, it is beautiful out there and at elevation there is very little humidity. The true intention of the trip, as important as the college visit was, was to go to Breckenridge Resort and spend the weekend snowboarding. A couple of my dad's friends were also going and we were going to share their timeshare.…

The next morning, Mercy surprised Surina by joining her for breakfast on the sunny terrace in the backyard of her cottage. They enjoyed the leisurely meal to the sound of honey bees buzzing around an assortment of flowers in full bloom lining the edges of the garden. Indeed, the fragrance of the rhododendrons, chrysanthemums, foxgloves, roses, and lilies of the valley intermingled to create a unique heavenly perfume. In the past, Surina’s kinetic pace never allowed her enough time for breakfast other than a hasty granola bar before frantically rushing off to the hospital. In contrast, today she luxuriated in a proper full English breakfast.…

My previous camping trips I have taken in the past years have been memorable and full of hardship. I consider myself a very outgoing and adventurous person, that is why I go on crazy trips. Canoeing is my preferred way of traveling when touring lakes and rivers such as the Boundary waters and the Flambeau river. Major disadvantage of canoes is that they weigh up to 85 pounds. The weight matters being when crossing land to get to the next lake the canoe goes on your shoulders to carry it.…
