Personal Narrative-My Journey To Sierra Leone

Decent Essays
It was on a voluntary mission that I decided to go to the war stricken Sierra Leone. When I finally got off the bus in Freetown I was shocked to see three little children aged less than five years begging for alms in the hot sun. Suddenly I realized tears welling up in my eyes. Sensing that I may offer some alms, our guide instructed me not to give them money as they will be encouraged to beg rather than going to school. However, I could not overlook the plea in their innocent eyes. I walked to them, bent down and gave each of them a packet of food I have carried in my bag for myself. Their eyes gleamed with joy. I couldn’t believe that such a tiny gesture could mean a lot to those children. Their eyes continued to haunt me for several months.

The moment that I have chosen is when I went to Guatemala last summer and met my cousins, aunts, and uncles for the first time. There was a big gathering with all of my family members, and there was a lot of food too. The kind of food that I remember eating was pupusas and tamales. While I was eating all this food, everyone came up to me and asked me “If I was in school?”, “What was I studying?”, “Did I have a girlfriend?” normal questions like that.…

My mom brought my little sister and me to this country six years ago, thinking that we might have a better life than the one we had in our native country. Even though we were not in a low social status in El Salvador and we always have something descent to eat, we did not go to a lot of places than home, school, and the grocery store; however, we went once a month to the only mall in our city thirty minutes from home to distract our minds from our everyday routines. Nevertheless, I miss my father, my big brother, my friends, and the way of living in El Salvador. After gaining experience in life and working since I was seventeen, I know what I want to do with my life thanks to my mom and her wish and willingness to do of my sister and me a professional.…

Four years ago, my life took a path I had not imagined. I was presented with the opportunity to travel to Guatemala and help indigenous Mayans in some of the most poverty stricken regions. Now this may sound like an ordinary service trip to travel internationally and give charity to a stranger and feel good about yourself, but the experience was much more. Yes, I built stoves in homes, handed out water filters, food, chickens, and participated in eye clinics; but the immersion and interaction within their culture proved to be life changing, even despite a complicated language barrier. Like most children, I had many aspirations of future career possibilities such as an engineer or astronomer while growing up.…

This past summer, I took an adventure down to Antigua, Guatemala. While we were there we built homes, ran clothing distributions, worked at orphanages and malnutrition centers, gave food to the homeless, and preached on the streets to those around us. I didn’t expect much to change for me. I knew I’d have a greater appreciation for my life back home in the US, but I wasn’t prepared to be shaken so dramatically by what I experienced. I was put into a group with four other people to build a house for a small family who lived at below poverty level in Guatemala. Just to clarify, our poverty level in the United States is classified as just a bit above average in Guatemala.…
