Personal Narrative: My Journey To Guatemala

Four years ago, my life took a path I had not imagined. I was presented with the opportunity to travel to Guatemala and help indigenous Mayans in some of the most poverty stricken regions. Now this may sound like an ordinary service trip to travel internationally and give charity to a stranger and feel good about yourself, but the experience was much more. Yes, I built stoves in homes, handed out water filters, food, chickens, and participated in eye clinics; but the immersion and interaction within their culture proved to be life changing, even despite a complicated language barrier. Like most children, I had many aspirations of future career possibilities such as an engineer or astronomer while growing up. Similarly, I discovered many young Guatemalan children have dreams and wishes for their futures as well. Sadly, many of them do not have the financial support to participate in basic schooling, and instead help their families by tending to fields or selling …show more content…
In Guatemala, residents of smaller communities are grateful for what little they are able to obtain, including food, shelter, and clothing, to which we usually categorize as basic necessities. Their smiles reflect the joy they find in life despite unfavorable living conditions. Seeing this on a personal level has helped me recognize that material items, with which much of the human race seems to be obsessed, should not define true happiness. Things are just that, they stop working or fade or rust and are no longer of any value. If your life is all about things, then maybe your life becomes of no value. Conversely, living a life of value can be achieved by loving your neighbor and the world by sharing resources and virtuous spirit rather than destroying relationships through greedy and selfish motivations. Sometimes you realize that in helping others you help

Two plump brown faces peered around the corner at me, their wide brown eyes taking in my pale complexion and straight brown hair. Hearing their giggles I turned and looked up at them before responding with one of the only phrases I knew of the spanish language, “hola” “¿cómo estás?” This caused a panic and they quickly disappeared, laughing to themselves and speaking in a language I had only begun to understand. A few seconds later I could feel their eyes staring down at me again, I quickly shot my head around to stare at them again, this caused them to dart away even quicker before being followed by a uproar of giggles. This experience was something I had grew quite accustomed to in my short time in Guatemala.…

My parents are from an impoverished country in Central America called El Salvador. Leaving their home has always been hard for them, but they had certain difficulties that made them unable to stay. They often told me stories of what it was like over there. They told hilarious tales about the work they did and described their home as a poor but beautiful place. Their eyes lit up whenever they told these stories and it was easy to see how much they miss it.…

As I glance around my surroundings atop a comfortable bed, I observe a desk equipped with a computer, a drawing desk ladened with paper, and a lamp upon a bedside table. I get up off of my bed and leave my bedroom to find four other family members, my parents and two younger siblings. I can but help to feel that I am extraordinarily gifted and privileged to be given all that I have. Throughout the world there are injustices, unmet needs, and sufferings that happen everyday of which I have never had to experience. It is for this reason that myself and countless other volunteers strive to alleviate the pains and struggles of others as best I can.…

Dad, Two years ago I told a young white woman that you were of Guatemalan descent. Instantly, her blue eyes beamed with interest as we sat on opposite sides of a small wooden bench. Noting her enthusiasm, I felt the pressure of an ancient and indistinct sadness well up inside of me. I had declared that my father was a member of the nation, and as his more educated heir, it was now my duty to answer as its ambassador. Averting her gaze in an attempt to halt the forthcoming barrage of questions, I looked to the cherry blossoms, the stream, and the clock tower.…

When living in Guatemala I felt fear for the reason that my father,ULISES HERNANDEZ was interacting with people that would sell drugs and he would do it as well. He told my mother to take me with her because he did not want me paying for his mistakes in the future. This was one of the reasons and the other reason was that when I was about 11 years of age, gang members wanted to commit crimes and I did not want to. They started looking for me and wanting me to steal different items that they needed. If I would not do it they would threaten me by telling me that they were going to beat me and cause some type of damage toward me.…

I am a missionary. After only learning about missionaries from the olden days whose true motives were to colonize and conquer regions, this statement at first seemed inapplicable to my life. However, my feelings toward this statement completely changed after I went on my first mission trip to Nicaragua and met some villagers who will always remain dear to me. As the child of hardworking Indian immigrants, I have lived without fear of the outside world. My dad is a physician who earns a steady income, making it so that there is always food on the table, a roof over my heads, and access to whatever I might need.…

Last year I had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala, and visit my relatives for the first time. It felt like a special moment; there was tears and laughter when we all reunited. Even though we were there for a month, it felt like only a week. I had already gone used to waking up, and saying hello to my grandma. It seemed like a routine, walking to my aunt and uncle’s house to eat breakfast, and brush my teeth.…

Many Americans have a general understanding that families living in poverty are generally unhappy. Outsiders see poor living conditions, run down houses, and individuals who do not own a pair shoes. However, once you experience these individuals in person you begin to understand that their satisfaction with what they have and how they live. As a 6-year-old boy, growing up the Philippines was a humbling and eye-opening experience. I witnessed malnourished children alongside elderly individuals plead for money and food as I rode on the school transportation service every morning. As disheartening as it was to watch, these were the conditions I witnessed day to day and it played a significant part in my life and the goals I wanted to achieve. It wasn't until I moved to America that I realized how important making an effort to helping people was to me, and all of the opportunities I had to fulfill that. As a nurse, my mother would frequently visit a local nursing home and work with the elderly in need, who were abandoned or neglected.…

I have experienced much grace through the trouble and poverty I have witnessed through my mission trips to Guatemala. I went to Guatemala June 9-16, 2014, and August 4-11, 2015 (and I plan on going back August 2016). Seeing the conditions these people live in daily, has helped me take to heart the kind of help they are in need of. Many of these people have no home, no family or no money to provide for their family, yet they are still thankful. Most of the time little boys and girls won’t have any shoes on their feet or their clothes will be far too small.…

January of 2012, I was graduated from high school, and my real life was about to start. By “real life”, I meant an adult life, where I was obligated to either study or work to take care of myself. I was born in Colombia, but I moved to live to Panama in 2007. Panama provided to me and my family economic stability, it gave me the chance to meet people all over the world, and it gave us opportunities to grow that I consider we had not been able to get in Colombia. Among these opportunities, my parents gave me the choice to either study a second language in another country or study college in Colombia.…

I have seen many airports in my travels, but none as small as the one I landed at in El Salvador. As the plane approached the gate, I said to my grandparents “This must be the smallest runway I have ever seen”, while thinking to myself “I can’t believe I’m in another country!”. The moment the plane landed, was the moment the greatest adventure of my life began. I traveled often as a child, for my mother’s family is from Missouri, so we took family vacations back to her hometown. I knew how security worked and could do it with my eyes closed, as many times I was half asleep going through for a 6 am flight.…
