Personal Narrative: My Journey To Freeburg High School

The moment I stepped foot into Freeburg High School, I knew I was in for a big change. I remember when Smithton took the 8th grade class to the high school for a tour of where we would be going the next four years and as soon as we got there I practically freaked out as to how big of a change it was. Seeing the school on the outside, I thought it would be super difficult to get around because of how large it was, but the inside looked even more complicated. It was also really difficult for me to even start a conversation with most teachers, let alone joining any clubs or sports. Either way, I knew was that if my sisters could get through high school so I could too.
Becoming an official student of Freeburg High School, I needed to pick out my classes and electives. When reading the freshman paper, I enrolled in the basic classes you have to take during your first year. When it came to picking electives, one of the first things that caught my eye was Art. I always enjoyed drawing and painting and I was ready to start the class. I remember never feeling stressed out in art, I could just draw

I understand that the freshman me was a wreck, but I missed out on so much. I missed almost every football game, and sometimes I even purposely skipped school so that I didn’t have to attend other school events. Obviously sleeping is way better than school, but was it worth missing out on so much?. I would be the loser sitting at home doing homework while everyone else was out having fun. There was one time that I did go to a football games, which was with my older sister. I enjoyed the game, but halfway through, she grabbed me so that she could meet up with some random boy at Mcdonalds. It was horribly awkward, and they ended up never seeing eachother again. However, I’m glad that she was able to get me out of the house and let me have some

Since a very young age, art has always been one of my major interests. I found joy in getting my hands messy with the paint and then transforming a white piece of paper into a something more than that with a rainbow of colors. In school, I always made sure to take all the possible art classes that were available and would fit my schedule. I also began to get more in involved in after school clubs such as the National Art Honor Society and the SmART Club where we did several art projects every week. On my last year of high school I decided to challenge myself and I took AP Studio Art: Drawing Portfolio.…

“You’re just a white girl trapped inside a black body,” were words I heard repeatedly as a child. For the longest time I considered those words a compliment. As an African American girl native to the Congo, I was naïve enough to think this statement meant how fully immersed with American culture my appearance, language, and every aspect of my personality was becoming. To me, those words held acceptance from my American friends and families—the only imaginable thing any foreign child yearns for. It hadn’t occurred to me that underneath that statement hid a message very twisted that would follow me for the next 12 years of my life.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

My high school experience has allowed me to be a part of the band, choir, theatre, and Spanish programs. These experiences have all shown me unique aspects of my life and the lives of those around me. Because I was homeschooled until ninth grade, I never got a real chance to be a part of the community like I did when I became a freshman. Throughout my high school career, I have learned many things like music, Spanish, and how to treat other people. At Vicksburg High School, all three of these things go hand in hand.…

Looking back on my freshman year, I realised that it was not as bad as people made it out to be. People say in terms of grades, that senior year and freshman year are the hardest to maintain. However, in my opinion, it is the easiest. For me, high school depicted in movies and high school in real life are totally different. I haven’t really seen any bullying or upperclassmen asking for your lunch money.…
