My Journey to a Liberal Arts Education
I consider myself very lucky for having had the opportunity to experience an integrated education. Since I was 8 months old I have been in some sort of educational institution. When I was almost four years old I started private school in Bogotá, where I not only learned general knowledge but things that can only be acquired through experience. It is well known that a child’s first five years are very important for the development of his brain. In these five years, children learn skills and social abilities, which will determine their health and life as adults. This is a great example of the how humans can learn without textbooks, since at this age we do not know how to read, yet we still learn. As Albert Einstein once said: “It is not so very important for a person to learn facts. For that he does not really need a college. He can learn them from books. The value of an education in a liberal arts college is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks”. I strongly agree with Einstein, Educated people are not just those who have a great knowledge about one topic but the ones that are ethical, curious,

I could not agree more with Einstein when he says some things cannot be learned from textbooks; frankly there are more things that can be learned without them, than those that can be learned from them. Do not get me wrong, knowledge is very important and enlightens your mind in remarkable ways, however there are more important things in life than learning facts. My school allowed me to be a complete and intelligent individual in all aspects and they did not achieved this only through textbooks but through experiences. This is one of the reasons why I believe continuing a Liberal Arts education is

Liberal Education is meant to cultivate students, which means it intends to help with personal growth, knowledge, skills and also gives them the opportunity to learn about a variety of subjects including a specific field of their choice. This sounds very much like the purpose of college and lower level educations. David Brooks, who wrote “The Organization Kid” explains his views on liberal education and its effects on students. Brooks argues that these students are extremely intellectual, very respectful and motivated but that their educational upbringing and expectations put on them have left them as nothing more than programmed robots that take orders and have no character. This becomes evident in his interviews with students from Princeton…

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

Hamilton took me by surprise. I knew it was a small liberal arts college, but I had no grasp on how unique and genuine the community was. So many people said hi to my tour guide, Emily, as she showed me around -- including the line cook in the dining hall! I also heard how a student emailed 10 alumni to help her with something, and all of them replied to her. This kind of close-knit, loving family is what I want in a college experience.…

I came to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh because I wanted to obtain a degree in nursing. While sitting through freshman orientation, I learned that my time here would focus not only on preparing me to be a nurse but also on providing me with a liberal arts education. Initially this did not excite me, as I did not see the use in focusing my time here on themes such as sustainability, civic knowledge, and intercultural competence. I had thought to accomplish this, I would need to take unnecessary courses to fill a checkbox. Halfway through my education, I still do not know how to be a nurse, but I do know that my initial feelings about receiving a liberal arts education were wrong.…

In the article “Only Connect…”, William Cronon writes about the qualities gained through a liberal arts education. Cronon (1998) believed, that best type of education, is based off “nurturing human talents to expand the amount of freedom”, experienced in a society (p. 1). Even though not many people really understand how a liberal arts education work, it instills values that make effective leaders. Liberal education has changed quite a lot throughout history. To tell about a life experience that will impact my education and drive me through my educational journey could be a simple statement of how I would want to better myself, be a stronger provider for my family or maybe even so I could impact lives through a new field of work. As a youth I faced numerous challenges that resulted in me beginning my educational journey later than expected. Growing up my father, an immigrant from Honduras, sold narcotics out of our home which had a lasting effect on me after he was later deported which also created a slew of issues for me as a youth. As a result of the traumatic experiences that I had witnesses and endured, I dropped out of high school as the stresses of living in such a dangerous environment were too distracting at the time to focus in school. Though my father was deported after I had dropped out of school, I quickly faced an array of issues after he was deported that further hindered me attending school, as I did not have a safe place to sleep, or stay at as our house…
