. My high school years were rather rough. I bounced from group of friends to group of friends. I got in trouble, was an outcast, and just hated school. Therefore, I decided to never do my homework, try to cheat on tests, faked sick, and went through a terrible phase in my life. I almost didn’t graduate high school in fact; I had a 1.8 GPA with a 24 ACT. I knew I wouldn’t be accepted by a four-year college so I was forced to either not go to college, go to a community college, or go to trade school. Most schools I know of have band, sports, field trips, latest technology, and have counselors. Now that is great and all, but that isn’t good enough. In order to keep students’ invested the teacher need to do more than give a lecture, handout HW, and punish kids. The teachers need to make an impact on the kid. They should not just teach material, but also connect with them. If you can keep one kid a semester from dropping out of school, or just be there to listen to the problems they have. Then I believe those students will want to stay in school because of you. I know this from personal experience, documentaries, others backgrounds and stories, and from news articles. If the school is going to punish those for outside of school activity they need to take responsibility for a kid dropping out. That kid did not fail at school, the faculty/school failed him. How can you blame a 16 year old naïve kid for dropping out? If the faculty isn’t willing to go out of its way to help one student per member a semester from dropping out then they can’t punish those outside of school. If they want to be a parent and punish the kid they also need to help the kid by going out of their way. So the best way to enhance students’ investment in school during adolescence is for the faculty to step up their game and show those

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. Originally, my educational plan was to attend Penn State Harrisburg as a double major in Political Science and Psychology, to which I have already been accepted. My goal is to transfer or graduate from HACC without having accumulated debt so that my time at Penn State Harrisburg will go smoothly and be most worthwhile. I feel fervent that I have made the best decision for my current life situation.…

All my life, I’ve been aware of the people around me and considered what I could do to make their lives more fortunate. With this interest in mind, I joined the Anti-Bulling Club (ABC) at my school in the 6th grade, eventually becoming ABC president in the 10th grade. As president, my biggest priority was to make my school a place where students were welcomed to engage in discussion unafraid of what might be said; I tried accomplishing this goal by getting volunteers to hold the doors and greet peers to school each morning. Through creating this inviting atmosphere, students participated in more constructive conversation, leading to provoking questions that even teachers could not answer. When I transitioned to community college life in the…

When I never thought that I would spend my first two years of college at a community college. I applied to the universities I had in mind during my final year in high school and got accepted into all of them. Unfortunately, the cost was too much to go to any of the colleges, and the scholarship money was barely enough to pay for an entire year. The Honors College Fellows Scholarship was awarded to me, and the Honors College at Lone Star College-North Harris would cover the cost of my first two years of college. It was an Honors College at this community college, and a lot of what I have learned and gained is thanks to this program.…
