Most schools I know of have band, sports, field trips, latest technology, and have counselors. Now that is great and all, but that isn’t good enough. In order to keep students’ invested the teacher need to do more than give a lecture, handout HW, and punish kids. The teachers need to make an impact on the kid. They should not just teach material, but also connect with them. If you can keep one kid a semester from dropping out of school, or just be there to listen to the problems they have. Then I believe those students will want to stay in school because of you. I know this from personal experience, documentaries, others backgrounds and stories, and from news articles. It does not just have to be a teacher, any faculty member can be there for a student. If the school is going to punish those for outside of school activity they need to take responsibility for a kid dropping out. That kid did not fail at school, the faculty/school failed him. How can you blame a 16 year old naïve kid for dropping out? If the faculty isn’t willing to go out of its way to help one student per member a semester from dropping out then they can’t punish those outside of school. If they want to be a parent and punish the kid they also need to help the kid by going out of their way.
