Personal Narrative: My Journey Throughout High School

Decent Essays
My journey throughout high school was nonetheless not a smooth sailing ride. I started out freshman year with minimal A's and B's and had a mostly a C grade or below. I struggled throughout my freshman and sophomore year mainly due to previous brain trauma that I have experienced when I was twelve years old. I got into a bike accident and then re-injured it when I was a sophomore by getting into a car accident. This took a huge toll on my ability to perform at my highest potential because I lost a lot of my working memory. Simple tasks like studying for a test and recalling information was nearly impossible. I would do my best to get all A's on daily work but getting above a low F was something that I struggled to improve on. My anxiety also was the cause to low grades and performing poorly. Alongside of me going to recurring doctor's appointments and receiving therapy to improve my working memory, I spend months on end continuously ensuring my mom is taken care of and as pain free as we can make it for her. Her terminal illness made it hard to focus in school when all I can think about was waiting to go home so I could go visit her in her hospital room or making sure she was comfortable at home. Overcoming these challenges made me realize how strong of a person I am, and the amount of courage it took to put on a brave face and smile through it all. By overcoming struggling through school and working out an IEP plan, I was able to relieve some of the stress to pass my classes. …show more content…

Unlike many of my peers, my life story is slightly different. Many of my peers share the story of living in a single parent home, being homeless, violence, and poverty. However, in my case, living in a two parent household is strange to hear about to my peers. For me, living in a two parent household means more work because of my desire to receive a full scholarship. Upon my research, I noticed that many of my older peers would receive better college financial opportunities because of their life experiences.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

My second year of high school was difficult for me as I had taken on my first AP class and I had learned that my aunt had been diagnosed with cancer. That year took a toll on my grades, overall GPA, and class ranking, which all went down because I focused all of my attention solely on my one AP class. I would also be constantly worried about my aunt and I would catch myself drifting off just thinking about her, hoping that she was okay. Junior year, I was determined to obtain a higher GPA and a better class ranking, and as a result I would skip out on family events when I had homework to do…

Growing up in Hiram, Georgia, I never imagined myself at a high school in Wisconsin, but, oddly enough, I did always have a feeling I would end up at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Something about the atmosphere of Camp Randall drew me to the television for every Badger game. The red and white sea of people at the stadium would put me in a trance. As I became older and learned more about college, Madison continued to stand out because of its programs, its marching band, and its campus. I’ve always done well in school.…

High School was a tough time for me when it came to academics. I was in all honors classes, dancing up to 8 hours a week and had a part-time job. I continually felt as if I was drowning in school work and the very industrial set up of many of my classes just made me feel worse. Most of my classes and teachers were structured like a factory and gave little to no room for creativity. As someone who loved art, I often found myself seeking refuge in the art department with my art teachers.…

    Essay About Middle School

All throughout middle school and high school, I had difficulties with grades. In middle school, the main reason was poor eye-sight that was not discovered as an issue until the end of middle school; I did not have to repeat 6th, 7th, or 8th grade due to this reason. After middle school, my mother and I thought and hoped that my issues with school and grades would no longer be present. But throughout high school, I consistently ditched and skipped classes, and also failed to complete around 90% of all homework assignments for all classes. As best as I can recall, there wasn 't really a good reason for this; I was simply lazy, not motivated, and generally unhappy with school, and to an extent, unhappy with myself.…
