Excitement bubbles over each passenger, and our faces radiate with joy. Anticipation blinds us from perceiving the grand distance between our vehicle and our destination. Every approaching mile draws us in more rapidly than the last. Smiling from ear to ear, my family of eight has been overcome by a wave of contagious exuberance, Our expressions sing in unison, “This long-awaited day is finally here!” The expanse of this adventure stretches much farther than the distance from our driveway to the courthouse: in reality this journey has no bounds.

Cheerful faces of friends and family greet us warmly. Our brightly colored formal attire livens up the minimalistic space. Occupying the thinning chair in the front of the room is a kind, rosy cheeked, man with a receding hairline . A black plaque with gold lettering that reads “Judge Emery” adorns his bulky wooden desk. Stacks of legal adoption forms are piled in their designated place in the center of the desk. Two stuffed monkeys rest in juxtaposition their left. Their shaggy plump, plush bodies and goofy expressions make the formal event seem …show more content…
His petite, narrow frame hovers over the desk. He lightly balances the pen between his thumb and index finger and jots down his full name: “Thaddaeus David Cyr.”His face glows with joy, and he’s on the brink of bursting into one of the innumerable songs he has filled our home with since his arrival. Looking up, he’s brushing back his thick dark curly hair with one hand and extending the bulky pen to Michael in the

It was about 3:45 in the morning on a Sunday, where I found myself and my excited, wide-awake, good-looking boyfriend driving down a dark, eerie road to a hospital that was 61 miles away. Those 61 miles felt like light years to me I didn’t feel right all day today, I had a feeling deep down that my body was telling me that it was time. I was as nervous as I possibly could be, however, I had to remain completely calm because I could possibly be in labor and our first baby could arrive any time. One thing that I have not considered before was when it is around Christmas time, and people do the adopt a family, that some families, but not all did not like it when we gave their families free Christmas gifts for their children. It was mostly the father of the house hold that did not like it at all, because that made the father feel like he could not provide for his family. When it was time to open present the father would go upstairs and go to his room, and if his children ask their mother where their father was, the mother would always lie and say that he left and went to the grocery store, and he would be right back. Even though he was right upstairs, the mother did not want to explain why the father did not want to be down stairs while they were opening up their gifts. I just never considered it that way.…

It was a balmy ten o’clock on a Saturday morning in June; the thick air around the Humane Society smelled vaguely of livestock. Stepping into the air-conditioned chill of the shelter, I took a breath, signed in to the volunteer portal, and took my place at the front desk. On this particular day the first people waiting were an older couple, and my heart sank when I saw them. The husband had a bundle in his arms, something wrapped in an old comforter, and I had worked the front desk long enough to know what that meant. Sure enough, as they approached, the blanket shifted and I saw, as I knew I would, the white muzzle and emaciated face of a dog in the decrepit last stages of old age.…

It is such a special feeling living for someone else and not just yourself, knowing that your sole duties in life are now to love, provide, teach, mentor, and discipline.
