Personal Narrative: My Journey Into Heritage High School

Improved Essays
People often ask me what I want to do with my life and I still don’t know the answer. Ever since my freshman year, I have wondered what I will do throughout high school, what college I’ll go to, what I will do at college, where I will go after college, and how my life will turn out. I have been trying for a long time to find my passion. As I walked into Heritage High School on the first day of freshman year, I saw a multitude of opportunities set out in front of me: hundreds of clubs, many different sports, and a large variety of classes to choose from. It was all laid out so perfectly and at the time it seemed that I would have no trouble finding the niche that I fit into. The semester progressed and I soon found myself falling into a constant …show more content…
My thought was that if I join a whole bunch of clubs, then I have to find something that interests me. I joined FBLA, DECA, Men of Distinction, Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Chick-fil-A Leader Academy. To my surprise, the clubs that I knew the least about and that I was the least interested in, had the most effect on my life: National Honor Society and Chick-fil-A Leader Academy. Two clubs that seemed to just be good extracurriculars to put on the college application at the time. I was forced to participate in community projects and service through both clubs. At first I was reluctant to partake in these activities but I knew I had to in order to remain a member of each club. The first community service activity I participated in was an organization called Brown Bag Ministry. There were about twenty of us and we went to a church to make bagged lunches for a community in need. We then went to that community and delivered them door to door. This part was very new and very awkward for me at first. I had brought an old jacket that was too small for me in hopes that someone would take it. I found a young boy and asked if he wanted the jacket. Immediately after I offered him the jacket, a huge smile spread across his face. After I gave him the jacket, I saw him literally jumping around in joy. All just because of an old, used

“You’re just a white girl trapped inside a black body,” were words I heard repeatedly as a child. For the longest time I considered those words a compliment. As an African American girl native to the Congo, I was naïve enough to think this statement meant how fully immersed with American culture my appearance, language, and every aspect of my personality was becoming. To me, those words held acceptance from my American friends and families—the only imaginable thing any foreign child yearns for. It hadn’t occurred to me that underneath that statement hid a message very twisted that would follow me for the next 12 years of my life.…

Before high school, I always thought I was an average student, but when I transitioned into high school, people started to point out that I had potential. I began to work harder than I had ever before and I began to accelerate in every course. This never took a toll on me till the tenth grade, when my mental health started degrading. Anxiety was my first foe. During the beginning of the tenth grade, I had set high expectations for myself and it began to affect my life greatly For instance, after finishing the test, I would think about just one specific question that I thought I completed wrong.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

In my opinion, my most outstanding contribution to Coral Gables High School is helping my peers stay optimistic when they have school related struggles. Whether it’s having to stay up late doing homework or struggling with a class, I advise them to stay positive and that their hard work will be rewarded at the end. A school is made up of its students, therefore if the students succeed the school is able to thrive with them. By encouraging them to stay optimistic in school, they learn skills that will allow them to become successful and proud Coral Gables High alumni.…

It was in early June of 2006, a pleasant, exciting Saturday evening. One hundred of us sit anxiously, one after the other, in cold metal chairs in the cafeteria of my elementary school. We wore purple silky gowns. We wait nervously for our names. Once all our names are called, we wait patiently for what happens next, and look for our parents faces, we had just heard that we were the 2006 graduating kindergarten class at Elgin Elementary.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

The moment I stepped foot into Freeburg High School, I knew I was in for a big change. I remember when Smithton took the 8th grade class to the high school for a tour of where we would be going the next four years and as soon as we got there I practically freaked out as to how big of a change it was. Seeing the school on the outside, I thought it would be super difficult to get around because of how large it was, but the inside looked even more complicated. It was also really difficult for me to even start a conversation with most teachers, let alone joining any clubs or sports. Either way, I knew was that if my sisters could get through high school so I could too.…

When I first arrived at Sanderson High School I was fundamentally flawed in my approach to academics. I was ignorant of how much importance there was in my level of focus and effort. Although my mind was sharp my will was lacking, I still had the mindset that homework and studying weren't top priorities but more something to do with spare time. I would do poorly and then spend much time reflecting why I didn't get an A in an easy class or at least a B in an honors class. Now my GPA is rising exponentially in comparison to when I first arrived.…

My experience at Northview High School has prepared me in many ways to take the next step towards my future. Here at Northview I have learned many lessons, both good and bad. From being a student at this school, I have learned a lot of things that I should no longer do, and refraining from these things should give me a more successful future in college. Along the way, I have also learned plenty of lessons that have helped me better myself as a person and also as a student. One thing I have learned at Northview is that I should never stop caring about my grades or turning my homework in.…

During my ninth and tenth grade years I homeschooled and worked a full time job, maintaining a 4.5 GPA and being active within a homeschool group. I would have loved to continued homeschool throughout high school but when my Mother and I moved from the coast back home to Asheboro to be with family, my Mom had to go back to working full time. So off to high school I went, well it turns out real high school is not like the musical that I somewhat expected. Joining as a sophomore it was difficult fitting in at times. Everyone had their group of friends and they were not looking for new ones!…

My high school struggled with graduation rates and the very few that graduated and went to college often dropped out. The school system did not prepare students to do well in college, only to graduate high school and matriculate into a trade. As a result, there were very few AP classes and no SAT prep courses available. In addition, I was one of very few minorities. There was not much support or motivation offered, rather obstacles intentionally placed.…

I have always been envious of people who know exactly what they would like to do for a career. Sometimes they know before they leave high school and others figure it out in college. I however am still not totally sure what I would like to do. Recently, I set some goals for myself and seem to have a much better idea than I’ve ever had before. When I graduated from high school, I entered community college because that is what you were “supposed to do”.…
