Personal Narrative: My Job As A Resident Advisor

Decent Essays
My job as a Resident Advisor is to create an environment that is welcoming to all of my residents. This task is both exciting and daunting since one can have a floor made up of residents coming from all over the country, representing different backgrounds and socioeconomic upbringings. To build this environment you must get to know the residents and develop a true understanding of the background and diversity they bring to the floor. In the Human Services field I am very passionate about working with people in the deaf culture. I am passionate about working with this population because I know American Sign Language and I feel a connection to the community. Learning ASL took a long time and allowed me to be engaged in many events in the deaf community. I believe people in this population are not given nearly as much attention or opportunities as they should be. The lack of equal access to education, jobs, and basic interactions that hearing people take for granted is not fair and puts this population at a disadvantage therefore making it important for people to want to work with this group of people.…

In my working life, I have so many different work experiences that I can probably write a small book on what not to do when looking for a job. For my first job, I joined the Army right after I finished my first college degree; for most people a job in the military won’t be a choice, but for me I think I need it to build character and learn new things. Working as a Human Resources Specialist taught me many things, the main thing that I learned was never believe what others tell you until you see it in black and white. After eleven years three months and eight days I decided to hang my boots and become a “weekend…
