Personal Narrative: My Jazz School

Decent Essays
School has been blast so far. I did not know of all the things that I could do here, now I sort of do. This school has many good spots to eat, which is a plus to me. Other than that, I love all the work that I do here. The work is not just busy work like it was back in high school, which is the way I like work to be. I enjoy class here a lot and many times I find that I have fun in class here. It has been a very short time here but I feel like this school is a home that is not really my home. My jazz class is a lot of fun. I have found out a lot in that class. I think it is really great that you give us the chance to go a week early to school or to go when the rest of the school goes. I went one week early and it was great for me, I lived

Growing up in my small town has helped enable me to be the person I am today. In my school, teachers provide with academic challenges and I, Choosing to surround myself with peers who share the same values such as hard work and goal setting. My community has its perks such as easy access to events and buildings as it does make you feel safe and homely. My community also has its minor flaws: for example going to another unfamiliar community that just makes you anxious. “You’re just a white girl trapped inside a black body,” were words I heard repeatedly as a child. For the longest time I considered those words a compliment. As an African American girl native to the Congo, I was naïve enough to think this statement meant how fully immersed with American culture my appearance, language, and every aspect of my personality was becoming. To me, those words held acceptance from my American friends and families—the only imaginable thing any foreign child yearns for. It hadn’t occurred to me that underneath that statement hid a message very twisted that would follow me for the next 12 years of my life.…

Well it has been almost 4 months that I have been attending Roanoke Valley Early College. I love it here and I don’t see how anyone couldn’t. So far I have learned a lot about school. By taking time to observe my surroundings and everyone around me, I have learned that everyone in high school is not your friend and that I am learning how to sense a bad vibe before I let anyone get too close to me. RVEC is the only school that has taught me that all teachers are not these people that hate their job because the teachers here including the ones I don’t take yet are always showing us that they really want to be there and help us and teach us.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

In 2006, I began my journey at The Valley School as a first grade student. Moving over from my previous school, which I had attended from the time I was three until I was six years old, was fairly smooth. I had friends who made the switch with me and, being the social butterfly I was, making new friends was a breeze. In the first few years as a student, I saw Valley move into three buildings.…

My time at St. Cecilia school is never going to be forgotten. St. Cecilia has shaped me to be the person I am today spiritually, academically, and my friendships with other people. The theme of this year was living our strengths through service. I think this means that God has given us all a talent and we have to serve others through it. St. Cecilia gives many opportunities to do so.…

I have personally grow as an individual since I took my first steps into high school, from only worrying about school to becoming more involved in my community. Academics has always and will always be my number one focus, but it will not be my only focus. My only focus fas a freshman was my grades because I did not think I could handle extracurricular activities while maintaining excellent grades; however, I was wrong. As the end of freshman year approached, I decided to try out for volleyball and expand my knowledge and interests, which have sparked my involvement in other extracurricular activities my junior year, joining student council, National Honor Society, and DECA. I took a tour of Hayes School of Music in early September. The first class I took was a private lesson between the flute professor and the first chair flautist. At first I was intimidated and scared, but after talking to him about his classes, his friends, and his time as Appalachian, I knew exactly where I belong. The first chair flautist shows hard-work, dedication, and passion. He enjoys what he does everyday and takes great pride through Appalachian University.…

I attended the MTSUU Jazz Artist Series at MTSU on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 7:30 pm. The instrument amount was varied, but the expected Jazz instruments were all there: stand-up bass, piano, horn section, drums, etc. All of the woodwind players played different instruments throughout each piece. It was held in the T. Earl Hinton Music Hall in the Wright Music Building. Around 130 people were there.…

Though I am not even half way through my high school career, I feel as if I can still be a help to those who are just beginning. High school is probably the most important part of your life that you are responsible for in our teenage years, so it is important not to mess it up. There are a few concepts that I have figured out by myself that I wished someone would have told me. Those of which include never procrastinate, think about your future, learn how to manage your time, and do not settle for less than your best. My visit in the 2nd Grade reading class at the Star Point School was a very interesting one. One thing that made an impression on me was the use of a clicker. A clicker was used to keep them in rhythm. Every time the children would say a word or repeat anything back to the teacher, you would hear a sharp click sound. I personally did not like the clicker at all.…
