Throughout my life I have been part many diverse cultures and of many community that contain a wide range of race and ethnicity. I was born in Ecuador and moving to the United States was a huge slap in the face. The culture and the way thing were done here compared to my home country was totally different. Before addressing why Pitt is a good choice for me, I would like to review why I am a good choice for Pitt. The University of Pittsburgh values their “talented, diverse and high achieving students”, their “safe and healthy campuses”, their unique balance of “fun and camaraderie with internships and other learning opportunities outside the classroom”, and their focus on “developing students into global citizens” (University of Pittsburgh webpage, ‘Prospective Students’). I am a well-rounded student who places priority upon academics, as well as a broad array of performing arts extracurricular activities, over 300 hours of community service, several job experiences and religious organizations. Therefore, if admitted to The University of Pittsburgh, I would fit right in with the ardent and accomplished student body, just as I would benefit as a person and as…

Going through small private schools in a little town since I was in kindergarten has set me up for very few cultural experiences but my parents never wanted my siblings and I to grow up like this. When my family goes on vacation my mom always tries to fully submerge us in the culture around us. For example, a few years ago, my family and I went on a vacation in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. We stayed in a nice resort and it was never necessary to leave the property if you didn’t want to. Most people never did.…

I didn't mind that my pant size would get at least two sizes bigger, I wanted to experience life in rural Italy before I died. So fitting in a snug size 7/8 I have now checked that item off my bucket list. There are certain cultures and languages that you just find yourself gravitating towards as a youngin'. For me, it was always French, partially because my last name is Franco and I always thought it was perfect if I became a Franco-phone. Being a part of an Italian family has its perks, the main one being food. When my great grandparents immigrated from Italy to the United States in the early 1900s, they brought the country’s mouthwatering cuisine with them. Their exclusive recipe for tortellini soup, a dish containing ring-shaped pasta filled with meat or cheese suspended in broth, is deserving of an award. Three generations later, my parents and I still concoct this soup during the holiday season. Making homemade tortellini soup takes hours of effort and concentration over the course of three days, but it allows my family to spend time together while preparing a dish that we all savor.…

My reasoning for selecting Italy as my study abroad destination can be attributed to my love for genealogy. My research on the well-known Ancestry.com website dates back to 2012 where there has since been an addition of over 1000 members to my family tree. After learning that my maternal second great-grandfather moved to the United States from Italy in the late 1800 to early 1900’s, my interest has broadened to learning more about my ethnicity. Results from an AncestryDNA test further promotes my ties with Italy, Ireland, and Great Britain, as well as at least six other regions. Between my maternal grandmother and descendants from my father’s exceptionally large family, I likely have ties among the German and Dutch as well.…
