Decent Essays
I have been involved with the Girl Scouts for ten years. I earned my Silver Award for making a positive difference in my community. Because of my strong passion to Improving our environment, I saw the need to keep our parks clean. Since five, playing softball has had a positive impact on my life and I have spent countless hours at my local park. However, it disturbed me that people choose not to recycle and to litter.
My Plan for my Silver Award was to design and paint murals to promote recycling. In order to make this vision a reality, I needed to develop a detailed plan. I planned to team up with a local artist to help make the murals a reality. Locating an artist was a daunting task, as virtually everyone seemed too busy to help a Girl

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

Every summer I work at Featherbed Lane Day Camp. There I have the opportunity to be a caregiver to the campers from ages 7 months to 13. One time I was paired with the kindergarten girl’s group. It was an amazing time with them because I love young kids, especially the girls since I’m one. One problem I had was giving an equal amount of love and attention to each girl.…

I am famous for being the first miss america to ever be crowned, in 1921. My greatest achievements are winning Miss Washington, D.C, Inter-City Beauty Amateur, The Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America, and the coveted grand prize of the Golden Mermaid trophy. Because the Inter-City Beauty Amateur and The Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America wins didn't roll off the tongue, the council renamed those wins to Miss America for me. So, I was the first Miss America, but they didn't start to call the win Miss America until the year after I won it. A theme from the 1920s that I most identify with is flappers and modernizing the female population so women are taken more seriously and viewed as an equal to the male population.…

I have been heavily involved in my community by volunteering for events such as the CIBC Run for the Cure, Tour de Delta and a summer soccer camp for young children. Also, I have been a part of Grad Council since last year, despite being in grade 11 at the time. I was at all of our fundraisers last year and was often the first one to arrive and last to leave. This year I have joined Student Council as a grade representative and have already organised a grade 8 welcome and look forward to organizing more events this…

“London Bridge is falling down/falling down, falling down/London Bridge is falling down/ My fair lady. ” When I was 15 years old, I started my first job as a counselor for the Green Island Park Program, where I sang nursery rhymes, played games, and oversaw arts and crafts with children in the program. Even though I faced challenges, such as getting all the children to participate in the daily activities or dealing with children that misbehaved, I never had a dull moment during my five years as a camp counselor.…

Don’t be a litterbug I would always look around my neighborhood, school, and various places that I would hang out in and see trash. I always wondered why the place I lived in consumed so much litter. It was so easy for us as a community to just properly dispose of our trash, but we never did. All around school there were candy wrappers, biscuitville bags, plastic water bottles and other various items that never seemed to make their way into the trash cans.…

Many people do not even know about the recycling centers, and we need to make sure they knew where they are and how to use them. For example, there are recycling bins behind almost all of the area schools and anybody can drop off their recyclables there, they are not only for the school, anybody can use them. We also need to get the word out about all of the area recycling centers, like the one in Union, or the ones in Washington. If more people knew about these places they might be more willing to drop off their recyclables there. You can make a difference by telling your family about these places and how easy it is to…

Thanks the Texas Exes alumni, I was able to go to Camp Texas for free this year. At first I thought that it was like any normal 3- day camping trip, which made me extremely excited since I enjoy camping very much. Once I got there, I realized that it was a different type of camp. I was nervous and scared because I’m not very good at socializing. The reason I’m writing this is because I learned so much about being open minded, accepting, and kind to other people and new experiences.…

Through this project, I have seen that these small actions like picking up trash can have a big impact when many people do them, but it is not a regular occurrence for people to do on a day to day basis. Numerous times on my trips I was given some very interesting looks. Whether it was a double take from seeing a student carrying many cardboard boxes across a parking lot, or watching that same student push his bike while carrying those same cardboard boxes along with a bag full of glass bottles. Even in progressive Missoula, the idea of someone taking several hours of their time to pick up trash is seen as odd. That is why I am now looking into large scale solutions to damaging effects on the Earth, such as climate change and pollution.…
